Question winter tires/wheels

Hey i know there aren't alot of people that have to deal with the harsh winter elements in their L but i unfortunately do. I was curious as to what people did for winter tires and rims, by the looks of it i can not put anything smaller than a 17" wheel in the rear due to the size of the rotors and buying a 17 inch wheel for the winter is a waste of money. Furthermore i do not want to buy just tires for the stock rims b/c it will cost $160+ every year just to get them swapped. Does anyone have any ideas or know of a place to get cheap cheap rims? thanks alot

Do a SEARCH under my screen name and the word 'winter' and you'll find lots of threads with good info.

Call the Tire Rack for a wheel/tire combo quote. I paid ~$700 delivered (I think) for Bridgestone Winter Dualer 225/16's mounted on take-off Expedition cast wheels. My first set lasted 4 seasons (~40,000 miles). My second set cost ~$450 last fall (just tires, I mounted them myself at my brother's shop).

I put 500# of sand & salt in bags in a 2x8 crib I made for the bed and get around fine. When it's real bad, I put it in '2' (not 'D') and keep it below 40 MPH. 5 winters on it so far and no problems when the weight is in.

Tire rack is the place to call. I ran a 16" ford take off wheel with 225/75 blizzak and the thing handled like a 4x4. Total cost with shipping was 6something, It will most definetly look like hell though. Also remember the thinner the tire the better it will be in the snow.

As with what DH said. Good advice.

I got some 16 inch steel wheels that are the same as the spare tire rim. Instead though, I picked up some 255/70/16 tires. I had the 225 setup on my 99 Lightning but I didn't like the stabillity of them. I went with the slightly wider setup and they worked beautifully through the last winter up here!
