Whiring noise
Whiring noise
Hello everyone. I was wondering if anyone could possibly help me out here. I have a 99 L with just over 34k miles and it runs really good. For a while now, there has been a strange squealing noise coming from the engine somewhere. I took it to the dealership and they had suggested that it was the IAC valve. I bought the part and put it on myself (really simple and I saved 120.00 on a 2 min install). For about almost 3 weeks the sound went away until it came back again tonight. I'm just really confused on what it could be. I've read some threads on here about the fan clutch going out and making (what seems) that same kind of squealing sound. Also right as I turn off the ignition, I can hear it turn off as soon as I turn the key off, so I'm thinking it's something mechanical and not so much air sensor related. If anyone has any suggestions on what this could be it would be much appreciated.
Thanks!
Thanks!
how many miles on the truck?
I was thinking clutch fan, but if the dealership heard "the sound" and didn't think it was the clutch fan
Never knew the IAC would make a sound, just a bad idle
Btw.....squealing sound is belts. Check your idlers that the belts run on. They are a known problem

Thanks guys for posting something about my noise problem. Today I turned on my truck and listen to the noise again. I can totally hear it from the bottom near the fan. What is weird is that the sound comes and goes. The noise can start off really high pitched then mellow out again then go louder again. I was wondering if this is normal for a fan clutch to do when it's not working right?? I wish I had a sound bite so that someone could hear it. It's hard to describe the sound on here but it's more of a wherrrring sound like a wherrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. haha..sounds funny on here but the sound totally pisses me off.
I'm not too sure how the dealership thought that it was coming from the IAC valve. I know that it regulates the idle and air, but the noise is definatley not coming from anywhere near the firewall or anywhere around the manifold. The truck idles just fine. I'm going to take it in again tomorrow, but I dont think I can trust the dealership again. They had totally misdiagnosed my problem and they tried to charge me for 120.00 dollars for labor that took me less than 3 min. to do. If anyone has anything else to add it will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
BTW, this is a really great site with lots of good info. It's cool to see people who are just as proud of their SVT's as I am.

I have the same noise, sounds like the fan is making more breeze than normal, like a lot of wind. The noise goes away after driving for a while and doesn't return until the truck cools down. I think it's the clutch in the fan because when it's cooled down if you try to spin the fan by hand it's a little stiff and that's not normal, when the truck is warm it spins more freely. The problem with taking it to the dealer is that by the time I drive it there it stops making the noise. Apart from that there's no problem so I continue driving it like that.
