2000 L problems

I've heard people talk about some problems with the 2000L But I don't know exactly what they are.

and what makes the HP difference between the 2000's and the 01's?

Reason is I found a Black 00 L with 60k miles on it. They are asking $23k for it. I know I can talk um down. But I want to know the flaws with the 00's before I buy. It might give me some bargining power too.

thanks

J

Just one mans opinion but I think that is a little high, thats near what I paid for my 2000 with only 20k on it.

well, what's the difference between the 99-00 and the 01+'s? There is a 20hp and 10tq difference. more boost? different cam? heads?

And I know there is some problem with the intercooler. Isn't there a problem with the heads as well? any thing else with the 00's?

I'm interested in it. But I'm not buying for about 2-3 weeks. I'm taking my physical therapy boards this next saturday. And I have to see if I pass. My job depends on it. if I pass, then I keep my job and I get an L. If I fail, I lose my job and keep my stang.
What mods does he have done to it? Is it in good condition? raced a lot? if so, was it maintained properly?

the hp difference is from a bit of a more aggressive tune and the bigger maf on the 01's
it also has 3.55 instead of the 3.73 in the later years
make sure it has had the intercooler recall done
other than that thats about it
i think
oh yeah that is way to much to spend on an L right now
i paid 24 2 years ago with 23g's on the clock

A year and a half ago I paid $20,500 for my 2000 w/ 27K on the clock.
It came w/ full Basanni exhaust and snug top.
They're trying to take you for a BIG ride brother.
That truck isn't worth more than 16.5K
Run from it like something big and bad is after you.

he's got boost by pass, PSP intake w/ the FAST AIR, JDM superchips chip, 90mm MAF upgrade, a really sweet looking cobra style hood, speed grille (also in bumper), 01 and up headlights, clear front corner lenses. I know he always changed the oil using Mobil 1 syn every 3k. That's all i can think of.

The only real problem with the 2000 you're looking at is the price.
All of the other "problems" can be changed. The rear end ratio is taller for 2000. The intercooler is smaller and prone to leaks, but a lot of them have been replaced. The mass air flow sensor is smaller - but they sell for about $150 on e-bay. The biggest problem in the early trucks has to do with the tendency of the spark plugs to come loose and take the threads with 'em. Big dollar repair to change the heads. But: As long as you keep the plugs tight and/or tighten them just as soon as you hear the tell- tale ticking sound, you should not have a problem. All of the above can be considered "market factors" which are allowed for in the price of the various years. The problem with the truck you are considering is the price. Too many miles to be even close. Pay heed to the advise of other members. A ticket on Southwest Airlines to Texas is about $99.00 and you get the fun of driving it back. Oh, and you save about $8,000. The 2000 is a great truck and you should not hesitate to buy one if the price is in line.

That price seems really steep. I searched for 3 months before finding my 01' L w/ 12,000 miles, a 6yr-100k warranty, and a fiberglass bed cover for $24k. And that was 2 years ago. I looked at alot of trucks and its worth waiting and serching for the right deal. I got really lucky with mine. Good luck!!!

Price is way too high. I found this one on autotrader. Just buy a one way plane ticket and drive it home.

not to mention the Cobra hood and what other extras may come w/ it.

Sounds like your emotions are in control.

Pass your test first.
It's not like there is going to be a line of folks that scoop up that truck.
It sound like a well maintained used L with average miles for that year.
Let them sit on it for a while. If your one of the first lookers of course the are going to ask High dollar but a month from now they may feel different.

You will get a nice L if you want one. Just don't get in a hurry.

This site has a nice comparison list in Gen 2 section.

also, his truck is under warranty until 100K mi. It has blown 2 plugs(1 on each side) and had both replaced w/ 03 heads under warranty. Currently everything is in good running order.
And it has had the intercooler recall done as well as having a spray in bed liner(One Liner).

Problems- I understand there are some problems with the heads. 1 being that there are not many threads holding the plugs in. they tend to back out and potentially even shoot out under heavy acceleration. 2 there is apparently a cooling problem that produces "Hot Spots" in the head wich can lead to detination. I plan to replace my heads to the newer PI (Performance Improved) Heads, these 2 problems have been corrected on all L's after 2000.

That Price is way too high. I paid that for my 2000 at a dealer last year, and it only had 6,000 miles on it.

yeah, I'm in no hurry to buy. I'm looking at this point. learning about the L's, and seeing what is acceptable.

yeah the Tx L sounds awesome. and it's a good price. I can get plane tickets for free. So it's a free ride out there. When I pass my test I'll get in contact with you to see if it's still available.
