Anyone Using 16" Wheels For Daily Driving?

Tires for the stock wheeels are so expensive and I was considering a switch to some nice 16 inch wheels. I know about the difference in handling but what I was really thinking of was something like a Weld Pro Star XP. I'd put one size tire in the back and a smaller tire in the front. I kinda want that drag look for the street while at the same time paying the cheaper price for the 16" tires. Yes, the first time it will cost more to get wheels and tires but after that, it'll cost less for tires and they'll last longer. Just looking to see if anyone has done this.

I run 16's all around in the winter. 16x8 255-65-16. I have to take it easy too high a profile bad tire flex on corners at high speed. Broke the A$$end loose at 70 on a exit ramp but recovered(scary).

Weld does not make the XP wheel in a 16inch that will fit our trucks. I was also looking into the same thing a while back.

Not a very good picture of the wheels, but I think JohnFastruk is running 16" Welds.

16" wheels

Just double check when ordering the 16" wheels that they will fit the lightning. I ordered a set of 16" wheels and tires to put on my L for the winter. They looked great but the brake caliper rubbed the inside of the wheel. I sent em back and got an old police cruiser to drive as a winter beater insted. (much better idea in MA!!) So just confirm the wheel size before ordering. Goodluck!!

I ran 16's on my L for my first winter. Here is my winter setup

Word to the wise, buy a winter beater! After wasting my time trying to make my L driveable in the winter I ended up having to buy a damn beater anyway. Picked this up for 2 g's,

and spent a couple hours trying to wash all the f'n salt out of my L....

But to answer the original question, yea you can run 16's on your L and that drag look you speak of looks f'n awesome to me. Post some pics when you get your setup completed.

I ran 16's in the winter, it looked retarded. Stop doing burn outs and spend the extra 150 to 200 for the 18 inch tires.

I'm in Florida (so northern Florida I call it LA - lower Alabama), and I'm looking for a semi-beater for the winter / bad days. Wish I would have kept the 97 GT afterall. And btw, Rainman, saw you're in Avon, OH! I was born and raised in Avon Lake (GO SHOREMEN!). Even folks from Ohio have no clue when I tell them where I'm from. I just say west of Cleveland, on the Lake. And I always think of home when watching C.O.P.S. - seems like there an awful high percentage of high speed chases and beat downs in Avon / Avon Lake / Bay Village on that show. Maybe its just the times I choose to watch, I dont know.

Anyway, I really think the way to go, especially if I was up north, would be to get a cheap hooptie for the coming winter. Im currently on the lookout for a semi-clean 87-93 Mustang to serve in that role.

My winter here in Indiana will require me to drive the L. (college student lucky enuf to have a l, no way to afford a beater).

so 16" wheels and winter tires are in my future this winter, least I got a garage.

Send your keys to me........you dont deserve a Lightning. Maybe you should put spinning hub caps and chrome tape over your stock grill next?

Someone else on this board already did the chrome tape over the stock grill.

From: Colorado,
I thought I found a cheap alternative.

Went to a Big-O tire store and they had some Ford Explorer aluminum wheels someone traded in.

4 wheels, lug nuts, center caps
4 new Michelin cross terrain tires 235/75/16
plus they threw in a stock steel for a spare and mounted an old tire I had.

$600 out the door.
Will take a picture when I put them back on.
Looks pretty Lame. But it sure gets around better in the snow.
