Talking My newest safety device

After reading all the talk about helmets last week and Al's helmet failing inspection at the last NMRA event, I decided to step up my safety program in my truck.

So I picked up a HANS Device last week and got to use it for the first time this past weekend. Like the roll bar and 5 point harness in my truck, I hope this is something I never get to test out.

I know it is expensive, and a little bit of a pain in the *** to wear, but I hope more of the guys who allready have roll bars get one of these. After all I want you all to be around for a long time.

So what do you all think, amd I nuts, or you think it is a smart choice.

From: Colorado,
Hope you don't have to checkout the next lane in a big hurry.

It is allways a good idea to have safety gear but at some point the confinement can become just as big of an issue.

How restricted do you feel in that thing?

Well thats what the mirror is for, and you better not be taking your eyes off the track at 100 mph or higher.

It isn't that restrictive, though you can't turn your head all the way to either side with it on. There is prob about 3 inches of movement in either direction. So there is still enough movement that once on the track you don't really notice any difference.

As far as it being confining, if I have a crash or a fire I am not going to take the time to take my helmet off before I get out of the truck. I am just going to release the harnesses and get the hel out of it anyways.

I looked into the Hutchens device, but it looked like a real pain in the butt to put on, and part of it attaches to the harness. If it ever got stock that could be a problem. Since the Hans just sits on your shoulders there is nothing to get caught up.

I thought you were nuts until I noticed that you have a 10 second L. Now I think you just made a smart move, especially if you spend a lot of time at the track.

could be a bitch if you crash and need to look to either side to get out. Maybe something in the way but you cant really see it or something along those lines. 5 point harnasses and a cage should do the job

Once you release the Harness you regain all movement.

If Dale Earnhardt had a Hans he might still be alive.

I like it. I have been wanting to get one for a while but the price had kept me away. I saw them for about a $1000 2 years ago. Is that what you paid. Please tell me you found it much cheaper.

See the name "Hubbard" on the box. He is a Civil Engineering prof at MSU that designed the HANS device. I took several classes under him.

When Earnardt died (my senior year), people were saying a HANS device would have saved his life. I remember tons of reporters in Hubbards office all day long.

Good choice Don
