Trouble w/new air filter

here's the deal: got a new cone filter for the '02 L. put it on, took it for a short drive and it ran like ****. MAF was plugged in good. this was just a cheap filter to hold me over till i get some more cash for a intake system. anyways, when i would step in the gas the truck would hesitate, then accelerate, when i let off the gas the exhaust, would crackle really loud, almost like a small backfire. the air charge sensor was mounted as close to the filter as i could get it. anybody else have this problem? thanks for any help

did you mount the sensor so that it sits perpendicular to the pavement, with the tip pointing forward? i was experiencing the same problem until i changed the position? don't know if that will do it but it worked for me

no, actually i mounted it in a vertical position. the sensor end needs to point towards the front of the truck, with the plug facing towards the firewall? ill go play with it and see if thats my problem.....thanks for the help

My MAF is the same direction as it came off the airbox. Why are you supposed to turn it?

The IAT sensor? It's in the base of the filter. You can see the wires leading up to it in the pic above..

I would just work backwards and re-check everything as it has to do with your MAF sensor most likely or an air leak after the MAF. I had a loose plug going to my coolant sensor after doing some work to my cooling system and spent a week trying to figure out why my truck was running like crap. I thought for sure the plug was pushed on tight and even checked it once so I moved on to thinking the s/c belt was slipping and causing the power loss as I recently had a smaller pulley installed. The simplest things can be overlooked with ease.

I've got my money on a tube unplugged under the rubber boot between the MAF and throttle body

did any oil from the filter get on the MAF sensor?

Use a non residue leaving cleaner (brake cleaner) to stpray off hte sensor..

Sounds like your sensor is dirty and an't get a good reading

Did you get a IAT sensor with the filter kit? Maybe the new sensor is bad.

What kind of filter is it? I have heard of people using cheap filters on other applications and having problems. Does anyone know if this has happened with L's in the past? Maybe the filter doesn't breathe properly or flow air properly over the MAF?

Did you disconnect your battery when you installed your filter? Thats very important, because it resets your mass sensor. You have a lot more air coming through so yout air fuel ratio is messed up. After you do that you still might experience some problems, I did when I installed mine. I was told by an SVT mechanic that you need to drive it pretty good for about a week to a week and a half to get the mass air used to the new air flow. Hope it works.
