Washing the motor good or bad to do.

I want to spray some degresser on the motor to clean it up,and then use water to wash it down. Is this a good idea or bad Idea. Has anyone done it before and what should I look out for. Thanks Jason

I have never been pleased with using any type of degreaser on the engine. Will never do it again. Keep it clean on a continuous basis is the best.

I here that, but these dam guys come everyday to cut the lawns around here. So my trucks sits there all day collecting cut grass and dirt particles. Then I drive it after work so it collects more crap, and I just want to spray it down to get most of the big crap off.

I would not recommed spraying it off as most people here can tell you your very prone to problems with the coil packs. Water seaps down in plug well to easly. If you do spray just try to steer clear of electrical componets. I think doing buy hand is the best policey, but surely not the fastest.

i have done it a few times and have never had a problem
i just make sure to take off my air filter and cover up the breather with plastic
but my truck will usually sit overnight after this is done well besides starting it up just to heat everything up to dry it off
but never had a problem withthe plugs

On my other vehicles, I just use Simple Green and hose it down. Can we not do that with these trucks?

That works well on a variety of engines, but the 5.4 will be prone to getting water down the spark plug tunnels. You may get missing or damage, not to mention jacking with the coils and plugs for no other reason is torture at best.

From: Colorado,
Had almost 40k miles on the 99 and used simple green a few times.
Turns the rubber white but just used 303 to make um black again.

Just be careful and used low presure garden hose at home Then went over it selectivly with compressed air.

I've heard some guys use those leaf blowers to dry things off with good results.

But like was said it is best not to get behind and to most of it by hand.

Just use the mist/spot free setting...water wont really seep into anything, if you power wash it then you're probably asking for some sort of trouble. I have always washed my engines this way...I do cover the filter of course...and my intake pipe because it spots bad.
I use a product called "ZEP"..you can get it at home depot...its the orange degreaser....works very well....even leaves a little shine behind...I have tried a lot of different kinds...this brand I like the best so far.

Thats how I have done it 3 or 4 times now. Driving through the winter you dont really get a chance to clean in 10 degree weather and come springs its all full of dirt and sand and salt.

I havent had a problem either, I usually tape a grocery bag around the cone filter and Maf and then spray down with simple green and hose it off. I let it sit for a few hours before I start it.

I degrease and wash the engine... I use air-pressure to blow out the spark plug wells after....then if I'm showing, I'll tire-gloss the engine bay.

It makes it look great but it attracts dust like hell. So unless you plan to recurring clean it, skip the tire gloss part.
