oil temp sender location help

i was laying under my truck thinking where could i tap into the oil system to get an oil temp reading.......well after much looking i noticed on the drivers side of the engine on the head, looking from the bottom, there is a plug......took it out and oil starts running out........ok. well the only problem is that the sensor will not screw in because it hits the side of the block. i have thought about grinding 1/16" off of the corner to get it to fit but i havent yet. what is this plug and is it any use to me? thanks

If it is the plug that I am thinking of it is an oil passage to lube the head.but it is not in the flow.so if you install your sender there it will work but the reading will not be consistant with the actual temp of the oil.The sender really need to be in the flow of oil or in the side of the pan.Stan

we

well i found a different port, it is near where the egr tube connects to the manifold, just above it on the heads facing out. you can see it if the truck is jacked up under the drivers fenderwell. seemed to work good. only like 2 inches from the shift cable boot. any more opinions. it had prolly a cup fow out of it when i took it loose so i know that there is oil flowing but i'm not an expert on how the oil flows in the heads

thanks!
