Fram Tough-Guard Oil Filter

Every so often I see a post about Fram oil filters and read how bad they are for your L. I stopped using Fram when I learned of the cardboard make-up here and there. I did some reading awhile back about Frams new Tough-Guard oil filters and found out that they went up a couple notches in the oil filters makeup. They now use a screenover by-pass valve and the anti-drainback valve is now made of silicone. The filter is now made up of a combination of glass & cellulose instead of the dreaded cardboard. Sounds to me that Fram moved up a little. Oh, they still make the old filters, but I would pay more for the Tough-Guard. Any opinions?

From: Colorado,
That is a great link to oil filter opinions.!!!!!!

Truthfully though.

I hope everyone knows that most of your stock type spin on oil filters have a bypass valve so that you are not filtering 100% of your oil 100% of the time.

If you change your oil often and do it when it is hot you are getting a lot of junk out of your system.

Fram has different grades of filters just like most brands that want to be competitive.

I don't have issues with them but I don't use them ether!
When I do an engine overhaul I generally buy a fram and change it aftet the first 20 minute cam break in.
Then switch to something more pricey

Anyone remember the old Franz oil filter adapters that used toilet paper?

I use a fram filter on my toyota daily driver and it works well so far. I've only had a couple of oil analysis done so far(posted on www.bobistheoilguy.com), but they seem okay to me...

That's interesting to hear that Fram has "upgraded" their "filter" design on some models anyway. I grew up in any era where "Fram Filters" were a "name brand" and respected. And I'm sure I used some of their products. But about 25 years ago, just for fun, I carefully cut the cans apart on about 5-6 differing oil filter brands to see what was inside them. Of all the brands I tore apart, I only found 2 exceptional ones; (1) The AC-Delco which seemed to "really" have twice the filtering area it claimed at the time as all others, and (2) the Fram which construction wise, looked so crude (the cardboard and string) and just looked like "crap" compared to all others I tore apart. I'm not saying that in a normal daily driver, not being stressed at any level, that it wasn't capable of adequately "filtering" oil - but it sure looked "cheap" compared to all the others. And I've never used a Fram since then.

Even it the TG ones are up to standards, why would you spend $10 for a Fram premium filter that only works as well as the $3 Motorcraft filter, and probably not as well as the $10 Pulolator Pure One filter?
