I know this is not normal!
Since the other thread got locked for me dropping the F-Bomb, I will try this once again, a little more civilized and detailed.
Here it goes ...
2001 L. Magnaflow catback, stock headers, stock midpipe/cats. I cruise in the truck for 20 minutes (NO WOT, etc ...) and the temperature of the exhaust gasses out of the tips is so hot that you can not stand 10 inches away from it without getting burned and the heat can be felt further away, not just directly where the tips are pointing! I know this can not be normal.
My buddy's L (completely stock) seems to be a lot cooler. I can actually have my hand a couple inches away from the tips without getting burned.
Also, my exhaust smells like a hairdryer that's been running for a long time ... ya know, that hot hot smell ...
Someone had mentioned the cats might be clogged ... Could this be true?
Anyone else have any suggestions?
Thanks IA!

I do know of the smell you describe and I have smelt that same thing on my truck. I wouldn't be too worried about it though. It must be a little more hot than normal or you're more **** than me. What I would do for now, if I were you, is get an EGT gauge hooked up and see what it runs at. I don't know what temp is normal (you'll have to ask about that) but find out what the EGT should be at and then see how hot your reading is. I know this will cost money but it can't be more than $100 and that's cheaper than buying new cats which you may not need.
ben,
I had my top cats melt down into my lower cats. I felt an extream loss of power and the excess back pressure blew the two small vacume lines off my EGR tube.
Had the cats cut off and mid pipes welded in problem solved.

I must say that it feels like i've lost power as well.
Get or borrow one of those infrared temp guage guns things and see how hot the cats are .. Compare it to a Working truck...
You can get the temp thing for about 50 bucks
Here is link - BUT i Know they are not that high

ben,
I talked to our dyno techs and they said that at idle you should be at about 400 to 500 max. They also said that you should check the temp in front of the cats and behind them. They said there should be no more than 100 deg. differance.
Hope this helps,
Suavy

I didn't get to do anything all weekend as long as my problem is concerned. I am trying to find a I/R Temp Gun to borrow so I can get some #'s. I really appreciate you finding information on this.
Once I get some #'s together I will post up whether I really had/have a problem ...
Thanks!
