Jacking Up Rear.....help!
Jacking Up Rear.....help!
Today, I am installing me rear shackles and need to rasie the back of the truck up on jack stands. My problem is that I've heard from more than a few people that I should NOT jack the truck by the differential. While I have always done this, I don't want to do it now that I've heard I can do thins like "distort the axle tubes" or cause the rear cover to "leak".......(it does that already anyway). How do I do this? Thanks.
I never heard that before. I been doing that forever......
Just wouldn't do it with the truck loaded down but empty you are ok.
If your worried do it from where the leaf springs attach.
I have even done it where the shock mounts are.
I think your freinds might be

If your installing shackles then you don`t want to jack your truck up by the rear end, you need to take the weight off the rear springs to install the shackles, put the jack under the trailer hitch and jack it up from there, you might need a piece of wood between the hitch and jack to get it high enough. jack your truck up until the rear wheels are almost off the ground and your ready to start removing the shackles, its not hard, it should take no more than 45 minutes start to finish.
dont jack it at the third member..... always jack the rear just inboard of the springs.
to change the rear shackles, take the weight of the truck off the springs as speeder has described, that will not involve jacking the third member or axle.
