Help! New Rotors needed

Well after all this, apparently my rotors have hot spots so they cannot machine them. Does that sound legit? Anyways, Pep Boys wants $110 each for new rotors. Is that a decent price? Is it worth the extra money for the RUSLOW rotors? Does anyone else offer something better for less?

I bought PowerSlot rotors from Tire Rack. They're more expensive than what you could get at Pep Boys. You can get a set of Brembo rotors (smooth surface) for less than $100.00 per side here.... http://www.coximport.com/store/BR27199

I'm also reading a lot about lubing the caliper slides...but can't figure out what this means. There is no reference to this in the Ford Service manual or the Chiltons...

Yes, you have to lube them. I haven't changed mine on my L yet, so I don't know specifically which kind they are, but there's typically a sleeve that the fastening bolt runs through. The caliper slides back and forth along the sleeve when the brakes are applied. (Think about it - the cylinders only appear on one side of the caliper - if it didn't slide back and forth, braking pressure would only be applied to the side of the rotor with the cylinders.) Get the sleeves/slides/whatever they are to pop out of the caliper (they may be stuck - which results in only the pad on the side with the cylinders being worn), clean them (they're gunked up with brake dust), lube and replace. Make sure to use "brake caliper lube". Sometimes a little tube of it comes with a new set of pads.

Any reason you went with the PowerSlot as opposed to the less expensive EBC rotors (354 vrs 242)?

I did buy the Brembo OEM replacement rotors the first time and they were okay until I put ceramic pads on... I too have hot spots, and I am going to have them turned one more time (this will be #2) and then get the EBC's.

Three reasons. 1) The EBCs were on back order. 2) The EBCs are coated black for domestic vehicles. 3) The PowerSlots look better behind my Boyds.

Dimpled or slotted rotors here. Cost a bit more though.

Any siginficant benefit with going to a slotted/dimpled rotor over a Brembo solid rotor replacement?

The main benefit is appearance. Most modern pads don't outgas enough for slots/dimples to help performance. Slotting can also provide better pad engagement on initial bite in wet weather and will clean the pad surface of minor glossing at the expense of greater pad wear. FWIW, you can get generic rotors from your local parts store for about $75.

Thanks Nathan.

These Brembos, http://www.coximport.com/store/BR27199 , actually seem to be the best deal around.
