Am I an idiot? Help with f/filter please
ok,
after 45 minutes of trying to replace my fuel filter I am still having no luck!!!!I have read numerous times Brook's how-to-guide, but am still missing something. I have the 3/8 plastic coupling. When I put it on I try to push it in , it goes nowhere. I understand that it will only go so far, but it is going nowhere . Do I need to push it on with a screwdriver, or should it snap in to place?? This is sooooo frustrating, and have done many searches on here, but I still can't get it!!!HELP!!!!!
Thanks ,
Michael
Also, my local parts store sold me a Fram filter, but I notice the stock one is a motorcraft. At the store, I told him it was for a 5.4 L Ford. Does the lightning have different fuel filter than the regular 5.4 Fords???

Here is a pick of mine (I use the larger Purolator F64711 filter)

First unsnap the clamp thingy (both sides) which I'm sure you have done Then the tool should slide inside the lip of the gas line, no screwdriver neccessary. While the tool is in you have to or I had to give a descent little pull and kind of work it out. Dont be afraid to give it a good lil tug.
WHen you put it back together you should hear a little snap.
good luck, you will get it. My first change was not so easy either.

So when the 3/8's coupling is in (should it be snug?) then starting wiggling the fuel line off? I guess I am trying to push the coupling all the way in and it wont go anywhere.......thanks for your help!
try put the clip on and rotating it to make sure you got the lil tabs both pushed in....then hold the clip in place and grab the other side of the filter, and pull it in towards the clip. thats how I ended up having to do mine.

I use the original Ford Motorcraft filter for the L. it's the best. If you want to go larger use the Ford filter used in the Ford Expedition, that's what my L buddies use, it fits the L, the only thing is you will have to use a tie strap to hold it in place.

Good Luck!
Thanks guys!!
I eventually said screw it, and took it to the local oil & lube where they did it for $20 and 15 minutes later I was home....maybe next time!

When I changed mine the first time, I struggled a bit on one side. It just seemed like it didn't want to come off and like you, I couldn't tell for sure if I had the cups inside the springs or not, but I kept working with it - and it popped off. A lot of us on here have had the same experience. I'm sure it will come off for you the next time too. I would stick with the Motorcraft Filter though. You do want to make sure you get the "right" filter, as one auto supply house I went to for a Motorcraft filter had 2 separate ones listed for the Lightning. I wouldn't buy a Fram.
