Launched a Plug... I need your help please!

Hi guys!

I thought the dreaded plug launching problem existed only in a far off fantasy land, but lo and behold I blew a plug last week.

My dealership is replacing only the head that blew. Did you guys get new heads on BOTH sides? I am concerned because my warranty expires soon and I don't want it happening again.

I blew the driver's side 3rd back plug, and it took the threads with it. The passenger side head is not being replaced, so I hope to God that side doesnt blow a plug after I'm out of warranty.

I asked the dealership to provide me with an 03+ head, and they said all they could tell me was that the replacement head has the serial number:

2L3Z6049DA

Is it the 03+ revised head with the 8 threads, or am I getting a crappy 99-02 head?

Thanks guys!

nope, unfortunately, you generally only get the head that launched the plug replaced.

technically, if the dealership was so inclined they could replace both heads, but IF ford called back for them, they could get in trouble (repair claim charged back) for not being able to produce two damaged heads.

however it might be a good idea to call the service manager (not your service writer) and discuss the situation with him. it MIGHT be worth it for you to pay to have the other head replaced. it would be the cheapest time you could have it done. if they've removed the cab or pulled the motor out to do the other head, the labor for the second head would be minimal maybe a couple of hours tops, but you'd have to pay for the part (not cheap). either way, it's cheaper than you having to do the whole job over again down the road to fix the other side.

just a thought

later,
chris

I blew one awhile back and talked with them about replacing both heads. The service manager said that if they tried to turn in both at the same time ford would not pay and it would be a major hassle. He told me to take it home after its fixec and wait a few weeks and loosen one on the passenger side and blow it out , then he could fix it.
If it helps at all my dealer said they have done a bunch and all but 2 were on the left (drivers) side, including mine.

ford would pay for both heads IF they were both damaged without any problems, but what is the chance of somebody blowing two plugs on opposite heads at the exact same time?
