MSD Ignition on our trucks?
MSD Ignition on our trucks?
I dont remember seeing too much mentioned about aftermarket ignitions on our trucks. Do they help? The reason i ask is i recently got a hold of a MSD Stacker 8 7020 for FREE!!
. Both me and my roommate work at dealerships and we always check out the harley, lightning, and dakota r/t (my roommates truck) trade-in's for donations
. Well someone happend to trade in a Harley F-150 Supercharged and they left there MSD Ignition and a Airaid cold air intake kit. Someone else got to it before him and took off the intake, but he happened to get the MSD for me. Will this work on my truck, any performace/reliablity inprovements? Will i need a chip reburn? And lastly is it hard to install?

Well i checked that thred out and also went thru all of the ones i could find with the search and i cant find a trace of anybody that has installed one on a lightning
. I only found one post of someone putting it on there non-supercharged harley f-150. There must be someone that has used this on a lightning i would think.

Actually when a vehicle is traded in, the dealership will remove any aftermarket parts on the vehicle to return it to stock. So in the instance of the Harley f-150, they removed the MSD ignition and the Airaid kit and replaced it with a factory air box. So any parts that come off that are not claimed by the customer before the vehicle is officially transferred to the dealership are up for grabs. So the only "dumb thing" is you jumping to conclusions and not understanding how a dealership works.

Several years back I traded in a Gen 1 Lightning and my sales person asked if the person who bought my truck if it was OK to call me in case he/she had any questions and I said sure. Needless to say I has a few parts here and there installed on the truck (this was a very low 13 second N/A truck). A couple weeks later the new owner called me and ask a few questions about the truck and gee some things were missing. He went back to the dealership and complained and several people were fired over that little episode.
If the new owner of the vehicles you are pulling parts off of and they request to talk to the old owner guess what could happen?
It's still stealing no matter how you slice it.

Secondly, since the truck was returned completely to stock and the new buyers had no idea that it had performance parts on it in the first place, they in turn would have no questions to ask the previous owner. So I state again...the only "dumb thing" is still you not knowing what you’re talking about.
If you want to call taking garbage stealing, that’s up to you. Because that is all that it is worth to the dealer. Once they remove aftermarket parts that will affect the dealers used car warranty, they either throw them away, or let someone take them home. Apparently know one knows what the word liability means. They DO NOT want to be liable for those parts or their effect on the vehicle. Regardless, I really do not want to carry this on anymore. I just would like some opinions and information on my original question. I’m sure there is probably someone who has used that ignition or at least knows someone else that has and may have some input. Any info would be great.

Basically, it's a waste of effort.
I didn't read odins links but I looked into this a while back, MSD said it can be done but at the time the whole setup was over a grand, I don't remember the details but it involved 2 control modules and a magic wand to get the wiring straight and even then the real word gains were questionable. I hope that helps, Todd
sorry to throw this off topic again
Well let’s see. First of all, the used car managers’s themselves are one ones who have the parts removed and anybody who happens to see the parts before or after they are removed will ask the manager if they may have them. It is then the managers’ decision if he/she gives the parts to an employee. So in that case it is not stealing, since the manager authorized the parts to be removed then, since the dealership has no use for aftermarket performance parts, gives them to the first person that asks.
First of all, the original owner and dealer already agreed on a trade in price, so what the dealer does with the truck is really non of the previous owners buisness. And the new owner and dealer agreed upon a price based upon what was presented to him (minus the mods).
Second of all, the dealer most likely didn't give the original owner any more money based on the mods (unless they were non performance mods), and even if they did, the dealership would be loosing by taking the mods off and having to pay for replacement stock parts to put back on.
Lastly, there's no way i would want the new owner calling me about a vehicle I traded in. If i cared that much I wouldn't have gotten rid of it. I can see the phone calls now. "Hey Don, I'm hearing a squeak on the right side, did it do that when you had it?? Hey Don, I farted on the seat and it left a stink........was that normal when you had it?? FORGET IT!!! That's the last thing I'd want.
No mean to flame you Jarmstro but calling the guy out as being a thief isn't really cool. The dealership obviously has a policy in place and is executing. If someone cared that much about where their trade in is going, dont' trade it in and sell it outright to someone you know. Then you can be the perpetual janitor to the thing for the rest of you life. FUN FUN
