I have resisted the move to race tires for several reasons. First, cost -- they cost more out of the store and wear much faster. Second, a wise instructor told me to graduate to race tires only when I hit the wall on time improvement with street tires. Race tires have a tendency to give up grip with less warning than street tires, so they should be moved into as the driver's skills improve. Sounds logical to me.
But DAMN what a difference they make at the autocross.
