help with homemade ram air
As Rich said, HD DOES sell the 4" flexible pipe,
and it does fit fine.
BTW,
Mine never hit

I changed it to 3" stainless steel smooth pipe,
but mostly because the JLP box I bought a yr or so ago,
is 3" (my old home made box was 4")

If you're smart, you'll do as I did and use smooth wall pipe,
it keeps the air flow smoooooooooooooth.
If 3" is ok for you, go buy standard 3" galvanized Flu Pipe,
at home depot, you'll only need maybe 2 lg's and 2 ell's,
should cost you under $10.00.
I sell Stainless here at work, but it's very expensive
(of course I didn't pay for mine)
Plenty of pictures of my piping in my Mod Gallery

Ok, I'm home for lunch now, so here's how you hard pipe it
You use a 45 Degree turn off the box

Then a straight piece coming through the fender well (@18"-24")
I did trim a tiny bit of plastic with a snips to make it sit better

Then a 60-90 degree turn off of that

You can even flatten the ell a bit by hand,
making a nice inlet scoop

When your done, you have a nice smooooooth air inlet,
with two minor turns. It is a much much much straighter and more direct path for the air to travel vs what they give you with a std cool air kit to use for piping.
Mine has never hit ever

Don't let the angle of this pic fool you, there is a ton of room,
and not one scuff mark on it after a yr or so of driving
