Is my separator installed correctly? (pic)
Is my separator installed correctly? (pic)
Didn't get any instructions with it. Does it look right? Not sure why there is a bend?

the advantage is it helps keep most of the heavy oil laden vapors form your PCV system out of your plenum, intake galley and cylinders., If you pull the rubber line of the back of your plenum you will find oil.
There is one small hole on each cam cover that is responsibly for oil in the intake.
Drivers side cam cover has a path to the rubber intake boot.
Passenger side has a path to the plenum.
The mass of air that enters the the drivers side boot is equal to the mass of air that enters the pass. side plenum. Simple, you can read alot where people talk about the cause of oil ingestion being boost psi. and vacuum but it not something you can succesfully do anything about to prevent oil ingestion.
The path from the passenger side cam cover to the back of your plenum is a short one
this path for venting. the drivers side is just the metered air source for your closed PCV system. There have been many kits out on the market that attempt to stop the heavy oil from entering the plenum.
One kit that has been the most popular simply plugs the path....duh.... it places a plug at the back of the plenum. This leaves you with the drivers side cam cover as a path for venting and the vacuum line from the intake galley which now is a direct line to the passenger side cam cover.
another kit puts a filter on top of the cam cover on the passenger side .. the kit designer has been moving this filter around from the oil cap to the center of the cam cover because its still only working like a 15 dollar separator.
and in the end all the crankcase vapors are still heading to the combustion chamber and at best you are only stopping 98% of the oil.
To stop 98% of the heavy oil use a separator like fractaldragon and use something to act as a baffle.
EXP: fractaldragon, could put some wire mesh in the line that rises from his cam cover that will catch oil and let it drain back....
The only way to stop oil in the intake is to stop letting it vent there.
I plugged the lines and installed 3 breather to let the crankcase vent, works fine, and no adverse affects to oil quality .which I closely monitored the last 7 months...

What kind of wire mess would you suggest? What doesn't block air flow too much or have a negative chemical reaction? Some stainless-steel mesh used for another purpose that's readily available? Any suggestions?

RED 92,
Good write-up. With the breathers in place, I assume you had to have your chip reflashed to take this into account? Otherwise, the PCM will see a sizeable vacuum leak won't it?

Your probably remembering reading other members who just added a breather to their closed PCV system"which is a part of your closed air intake system". Just adding a breather introduces air into the intake system that did not pass through the MAF......so tuners would allow for this lean condition on the chip burn.
Your simply removing the crankcase ventalation from your air/fuel mixture.
When you plug the drivers side intake boot and plug its equal AIR MASS inlet at the back of the plenum there is nothing unequal for the PCM to see....
Plug the vacuum line from the lower intake galley, plug the boot and plug the plenum and add three breather to ensure complete ventalation.
Mike Murrillo has dynoed my truck with the breathers and with the PCV and the separator and the diff. is 11.2 and 11.7 from 3900-5200 .
Mike highly recommends the breathers... ....with that Mustang in your sig. you probably know him

trying to keep oil out of a modified supercharged motors intake system when you have part of your intake air source from your cam covers is tough
I decided to be a rebel and vent to the atmosphere..... My truck passes inspection and tech inspection .....and no ones pulling me over to see if I'm emmisions legal....
Red 92,
Good explanation. You're right...that is what I was thinking...someone just adding a breather to the otherwise closed PCV system. We could do this with the old EEC-IV (OBD-1) and tune around it without issue. But I with the more sophisticated engine diagnostics, it takes a little more thought and know-how.
Yes, I do know Mike. I raced against him in the early, mid-90s way back when Outlaw 5.0 was Street/Outlaw and a fast car was high-10s.
He kept on upping the ante, and decided to make a run at it with his business. Those of us who just raced on the side got laid to waste.
I have always held Mike in high regard and am truly glad he has built a successful business from the humble beginnings it once was. Lots of guys try and never make it.
Can you post a pic here of the seperator? The one in the link at the beginning of this thread does not work.
Thx!
