The factory tune is much richer and more conservative on timing than any aftermarket chip. Why waste money and increase the risk?

Stock timing is 12 degrees, a/f is low 11's high 10's

Most chips have tunes with 16-20 degrees of timing, mid to high 11's a/f, even low 12's

I'm running a 75 shot on my L. That in addition to a 4# pulley, CAI, T/B, electric fan kit, and a really good dyno tune.

Results: 493 HP SAE
610 TQ SAE

Am I worried about the bottom end? alittle
Do I use the nitrous alot? NO

I think nitrous is one of the best mods out there, provided you don't take any shortcuts in using it.

I run 4 and or 6lbs of pulley
65 and or 75 HP of WET Nitrous
and OF COURSE a Chip
My Et's range from 11.81 - 12.1 with those set ups

Why would you want to even attmpt racing with no Chip ???
Ok lets see, first we have torque reduction,
that only cuts out 1/2 the frigging motor between the 1/2 shift
Then there's the good old rev limiter/FUEL CUT OFF
BELIEVE ME you DO NOT want to hit the FUEL CUTOFF while spraying. Not to mention, timing, tip in, ms between shifting, shift points, A/F, bla bla bla......

YOU'D BE INSANE NOT TO CHIP IT

A Chipped Nitrous program can address many tuning issues to
assure a MUCH SAFER Nitrous experience, it would also add much performance to the set up, and the tuners know to get the rev limiter the hell out of the way, so you don't shut the fuel off,
"should you loose traction" at the launch

A Chip is the single most important AND PERFORMANCE ADDING
option we have, GET ONE

You wouldnt need a chip if you use a SAFE nitrous setup with a window switch that only lets it spray from 3000-5200 rpm.

A chip will NOT assure a safer nitrous experience, it will have more timing and less fuel thatn stock programming. It will only make the nitrous more fun and the truck faster.

Why spend the money if it will be safer and more economical to run nitrous without one?

The stock program is conservative enough he could easily run a 100hp shot with no chip and be well within safe parameters. All the nitrous kits on the market are jetted towards the rich side. For example, Sal's nitrous programs are leaner with no nitrous that his street programs, because the kits slightly overcompensate fuel-wise.

I agree with Gadget on this one, especially since a local guy has been running a 4# lower and 75hp shot of juice with no chip since '01. Besides, whatever happened to the old days of tuning the nitrous yourself without the aide of a chip spitting parameters into your computer. If the truck is lean with the juice, just change to a larger fuel jet or smaller nitrous jet. If its pig rich, switch to a leaner fuel jet or larger nitrous jet. Read the damn plugs after every pass, change the heat range and plug gap accordingly...the engine will let you know what it likes. You've got plenty of options to make it safe without ever using a chip. Not that chips are bad, but not necessary either.

thats because we don't run carbs.

I agree with rob, running nitrious without a chip is just plain stupid. Maybe gaget is right, the stock tune is rich and low timing, if you really want you can have your nitrious tune done the same, but adding nitrious doenst necessarily mean that the a/f is going to remain the same.

Running nitrous without a chip will always be safer than running nitrous with a chip.

Remember we are talking about a bone stock truck here with no other power adding mods.

The jetting supplied by every single nitrous company errs to the side of safety, and they are jetted rich to make sure that you make power safely.

If your a/f is an 11.6 with no nitrous, it will probably be 11.0-11.2 with nitrous engaged, because of the convservative settings all manufacturers supply.

If you are smart and run a window switch you don't need to remove the rev limiter with a chip, the window switch will turn off the nitrous long before you hit the rev limiter. Even with a chip this should be a required part of all nitrous kits.

The truck will be safer and he saves money with no chip.

however colder plugs (br7 or tr6) are still a neccesity, as well as azlways running top quality 93 octane fuel and regularly changing your fuel filter and oil. Anytime you use nitrous on an engine you need to maintain frequent and stringent reglar maintenance habits.

Changing the jetting on a nitrous system has absolutely ZERO to do with an engine being carburated or not.

Ok I'm trying to see the point your making WITHOUT a chip,
and I guess if we're talking about a 100% stock truck ok yes you can safely do it, [b]BUT I totally disagree that you will run better or faster for that matter.

I ORIGINALLY had a very low timing Nitrous Chip for my voyage run on Juice, and I actually ran slower on Juice using factory timing + 2 degrees, than I did OFF JUICE using a 16 degree program. 12.7 all gasoline to be exact and 12.8 low timing with juice. I then went into the pits, switched the chip to the 16 degree GASOLINE program, and ran back to back 12.0's.
I have since then bettered that to 11.81 on the same 16 degree program. I COULD NEVER IN A MILLION YEARS RUN 11.81 WITH NO CHIP ON JUICE.

We're all entitled to an opinion and thats just mine.
But the fact we're talking 100% stock L, that is a diff situation.

To be honest, the day I got my L and constantly hit the fuel cutoff and rev limiter 100 times a day made me very disappointed in the L. If I wouldn't have changed that, eliminated the torque reduction, and raised my shift points to 5700 - 6000 RPM,
there is no doubt I would have sold it within weeks.
BTW, I shifted between 5700 RPM - 6000 RPM for over 2 years,
now it's 5500 - 5700

That's correct. but unless Jonathan is going for all out E.T, he will save money and run safer with no chip.

Exactly. He will be better off using no chip, it will be safer. However if he decides he wants more, he can always add a chip and pulley and jet down to a 75 shot.

I'm surprised your truck hasnt blown yet treating it like that, without ever having confirmed the A/F on a dyno.
