Transmission cooler question

Who has added a cooler? What is the approximate temp drop when using a 2400 stall? What temp should the transmission operate safely at? and lastly what cooler did you use? (factory tech, LFP, etc....)

I rarely see more than about 140 (measured in the pan, not in the tranny itself where most measure) with a stock motor. I installed a monster cooler and full-flow filter, but have not gotten around to cutting the tubes and hooking them up. One of these days . . .

How does it work inline with the stocker? Is there adapters or do you totally do away with the stock one?

I installed the Factory Tech Trans cooler. very easy - all fittings supplied, except i had a flare fitting on my factory cooler (you keep it, and inline the FT cooler) and had to buy a 6ANmale/8ANfemale adapter. all steel braided lines, very nice stacked plate design. i mounted the cooler with brackets right above stock cooler

trans temps (we're still cold here in northeast, most days) are down at least 20 degrees. even if i run slow around town in trafffic, where i would normally see 155-165 degrees, i am now barely at 140 degrees. most of the time i'm at 125 or so. still waiting for summer, but this thing definitely works, and was worth the price.

I also got a Factory Tech cooler from PSP, nice design, easy installation. I mounted it high to the upper radiator support, good cooler, nice stainless braided lines, and it came with all the fittings I needed to use it on my '03.

later,
chris

Tim, what kind of spin on filter did you use? Is it a regular oil type filter, hydraulic filter? Im doing a custom cooler set up and custom filter set up similar to yours. Thanks,

Keith

Yup. It's a Perma-Cool housing that accepts a standard Ford filter (the Magnefine prefilter is extra).

Yup. Regular oil filter. PH4 I think. The Perma-Cool kit comes with a filter and a list of the specific replacement oil filters that will fit.

But I doubt that your tranny is failing because of filtering. You should consider getting a monster box from Factory Tech.

Here's some info I got from BTE, who builds some of the baddest transmissions in drag racing:

trans oil temp/ trans life expectancy

315*f /800 miles (seals and clutches burn out, oil forms carbon)
295*f /1500 miles (plates slip, high heat low mileage)
260*f /5000 miles (seals harden)
240*f /10000 miles (varnishes form)
220*f /20000 miles
195*f /50000 miles (low heat high mileage)
175*f /100000miles

According to BTE, "A reduction of just 20*f can double the life of an automatic transmission, the fluid, and all internal parts."
