Brakes sqeaking at 13k miles?? Help!!

do we have semi-metallic pads that always sound this way on braking? Are these trucks equipped with sound indicators for when pads are shot. I do not want a shop to tell me that they need replaced just to get a sale, so i posted here first. Thanks guys-Mike

You can check the wear if you take off the wheel, its very easy to see how much pad is actually left. Mine would squeel from time to time after about 17k miles... I put some anti-squeel compound on the pads and rotors... worked, not perfectly, but it cut in down about 80% ...

my brakes started squeeking somewhere between 3 and 6 thousand miles.

unfortunately, it's normal.

I tried changing to ceramic pads (mostly for dusting), but they still squeek and dust.

BTW, you shouldn't even have to remove the wheel. why not just peek through the spokes on your wheel and look at the brake pads. (a small flashlight may help) you should be able to see if they are worn out or not.

brake pad composition choice is usually a compromise.

you can have pads that last a long time, OR pads that are quiet, OR, pads that stop well, OR pads that don't dust, but almost NEVER all of the above.

performance buyers want a pad that stops on a dime, unfortunately, these pads usualy dust and squeek.

luxury buyers want QUIET brakes and may not be as concerned with mileage or extreme performance.

economy car buyers want their brakes to last a long time, and aren't as concerned with noise or performance.

good luck.

chris

Mine were squeaking like a pig from 10K to now (@13K)
Just switched to Ceramic a week ago (no squeaking yet)
Although the old pads were 1/2 the thickness of the new pads,
they still had another 10 k on them I'm sure, (although the old rear pads were 1/2 the thickness of the old fronts) Power Brakes

I guess squeaking is just par of the course.
Now if I can only get a pedal on idle I'd be ok

my suggestion would be take off the wheel and check it out, cause my outter pads still have a lot of the pad still there, but my inner pad is completely gone, and it wore out my inner rotor.

Dman ... Sounds like your pads were not slipping on the stainless
sliders like they are supposed to do .... Pad wear should be dead even. You are clamping against the rotor with the caliper, and
that pressure is for intents and purposes equal.

Example? Squeeze your wrist with your other hand ... does the
pressure feel about the same?

Hope you got yours fixed up.....

honestly, I haven't found one yet, but I've only tried 2 (stock and I think they are Raybestos? ceramic) so I'm not qualified to make a good suggestion, sorry.

I bought the ceramic based on some suggestions here, and I personally don't like them. they definately don't stop any better (possibly worse IMHO) and they still dust alot.

chris
