SES light question...

Hey guys, I got a SES light tonight, and I used the predator to see what it was...here's what it said...

"Insufficient coolant tempurature for closed loop fuel control"

do you guys know what that means?

it sounds like your thermostat is stuck open. I guess it could possibly be a bad cylinder head temp sensor, but more likely the T-stat is bad.

the coolant isn't getting hot enough for the truck to go into closed loop, it's trying to "warm up" all the time because it thinks it just started.

since it's not going into closed loop, it's not using the oxygen sensors, and it's prolly running rich all the time.

just my .02

later,
chris

Thanks for the reply! I've got a few more questions now...

I just installed a 160° thermo a few days before this light went, did I go with too cold of a thermostat...I mean should I have gone with a 170°. Or do you think that the thermostat itself is just bad? Is it safe to drive like this, or should I go down to Ford today and get a new thermostat?

Thanks for your help

You may have to go witha 170* Stant... they sell those cheap at AutoZone type places.

Some people (myself) run a 160, and have no issues, others dont have the same luck.

I wonder if it's truly a bad t-stat or just differences in the sensor reading the coolant temp?

Im going to go to Autozone and pick up a new t-stat and put it in this afternoon, hopefully that'll do it. I there a way to check my t-stat that's in there now to see if it's bad?

Put your themostat in a cooking pot with some water and bring the water to a boil. You can watch the T-Stat open up when the water heats up.
