I want to mod....but don't want to.

Every time I am in my L, I am completely content with it's power and it's stock. And I used to drive an 11 second Stang. The problem is whenever I hang around you guys with pulleys and chips or whenever I log on and realize I am pretty much the only one with no mods. I keep tossin the idea of getting a 2# pulley and JDM chip, but as soon as I am about to pick up the phone, the worry of long term durability and blowing the truck up stops me. But hey after all it's only a 2# pulley right? Any suggestions?

Then don't. lmao. I've been stock for almost 3 years and anytime I start thinking the L is slow, I gas it. It behaves alot differently at 3/4-WOT than putting around town.

I went through the same thing man. If you start hanging out in here much, it will be hard not to start modding it and stay stock. It's all up to you. There's absolutely nothing wrong with a stock L and they run good from the showroom floor. If you are worried about your warranty or blowing it up, by all means keep it stock.
On the other hand, some mods (namely Chip, Pulley, Filter, FTVB) will really wake the truck up. It's a night and day difference. As long as you have got a safe tune and don't dog the living crap out of the truck driveability and durability should be fine. There's many on here who have thousands of miles with several mods and no problems and some with problems. It's up to you on what you want to do. Good luck with whatever you decide!

Thanks for the advice 1badlightning. That helps a lot. And you are right....there is nothing wrong with it stock and I do drive it a little on the hard side. I just may keep it stock for a while.

If your mods are packaged properly with a safe tune you shouldn't have any problems. After I reached 500 miles on my '03 I installed a multitude of mods including a KB, too many others to list. I literally have done, everything (almost) possible other than a built lower. No juice or alcohol injection and I am pushing 16lbs of boost, 4800 miles later, not one problem.

I think you see a number of "blown motors" because owners push the limit and take too many chances with aggressive tunes etc.

After riding an 11 sec stang I understand what you are talking about.

Good Luck!

D-Day

I am stock but I have only had mine since 2/2/04. I plan on leaving it pretty much stock for some time with the exception of lowering the rear 2”, maybe the FTVB because with all that I have read it actually helps the transmission with wear and tear, and maybe an exhaust.

Granted none of that adds any horse power or torque but it would be something nice to do and should have “very little”, if any, affect on any part of the warranty.

Wideopen03, all I have done is catback for the sound of the exhaust, k&n panel filter, foglight switch mod, cracked windshield mod, re-aligned the grill to the hood (passenger side was less than 1/4 inch away from the hood, drivers was 1/2 inch), boost bypass (4 dollars worth of stuff from auto zone) and scuffed my right front wheel on a curb. Don't mod unless you are prepared to pay for a new engine/tranny etc. I am not so Myrtle is still stock.

I don't blame you, mine was completely stock until 40K miles. How about doing the mods that don't even touch the boost/ECU of the engine?

Powertrain:
FTVB
Oil Separator (take your pick)
Air Filter - Ram Air setup
Cat Back Exhaust (maybe no more power, but it will sound meaner)

Or Suspension stuff:
Lowering
Better sway bars (Hotckis(sp?)/Hellwig)
Better shocks (QA1's)

Or weight reduction:
Do a search on this forum or NLOC for lists of ideas, ranging from free to costly)

There is plenty to spend your money on that will make it go faster, turn better and stop better without touching boost/ECU.

I've had my 2000 L for 3 and a half years, and it's still totally stock. Any time I start thinking it's slow, I just drive the Focus. When I get back in the L, it feels like a rocketship.

Losing to another L doesn't bother me, and won't motivate me to mod. However, if there was an SRT-10 in town, I might have to consider a few mods just to ensure I could uphold the honor of the L community.

If youre going with a 2# pulley, why even bother. Just leave it stock.

Question

Are you saying the FTVB should not affect the tranny warranty ??

Anybody have experience with that ?

Just wondering...

Don’t know who that is addressed to but since I also mentioned the FTVB in my post I will answer.

It “could” affect the transmission warranty anything is possible with Ford. The following is some information posted from Gregg about the subject:

Question: Can the FTVB affect the warranty:

Gregg: It's never been an issue before, BUT, in theory, any mod to the transmission can void the powertrain warranty. In the first 3,000 + that have been installed, no one has had a warranty voided because of one.

Question: Does it look very physically different that a tech would notice?

Gregg: No, the casting is a Ford factory part.
However, if you go with the 4x4 pan they will definitely notice that something has changed with the transmission. That is why when I go to do it with mine I am just going to get the standard FTVB and no 4x4 pan.

For me I think the FTVB is a good investment from all the reading I have done. Everything I have read about it basically states the same thing. It makes the shifts quicker when means less slippage in the transmission. Less slippage is less heat which is less wear and tear on the transmission.

For me the FTVB is a good risk to take since its main function is to help the transmission last longer but that is a decision everyone has to make on their own.

do some non warrenty brekaing mods, look into FTVB and the boost bypass (unplug selenoid)

maybe fast air intake.
