What is the function of EGR
What is the function of the EGR? The reason I ask is I think that may be one of the causes to my recent problems.
When I found my EGR nut blew off and I heard the air coming out it may a certain noise. I put the nut back on and tighten it. The sound stopped from the EGR but it was still present somewhere else. I think I may have crack the weld from where the pipe that goes from the EGr and connects to the exhaust manifold(I think that is what it is connecting to) If this was cracked and air/ exhaust was escaping could it cause the car to run ruff? At cruising it feels ok, not 100 percent but ok. When I come to a stop the car shakes, not violently but enough to make the antenna go back and forth.
Thanks

the purpose of the egr valve is to introduce innert (unburnable) exhaust gasses into the combustion chamber.
since these exhaust gasses have already been burned, they won't burn again, so in effect they just sortof "take up space" in the cylinder and combustion chamber.
since they are "taking up space" that would otherwise be occupied by fresh combustable air and fuel mix, they in effect cause a smaller "fire" in the cylinder. since it's a smaller fire, it creates less heat.
so the purpose of the EGR system is to reduce combustion temperatures at cruising speeds.
the purpose of reducing combustion temps, is to reduce NOx or oxides of nitrogen.
one of the harmful byproducts of the combustion process.
the egr system is turned off at idle and at WOT.
hope this helps.
good luck.
later,
chris
P.S. reducing combustion temps also helps to reduce or eliminate detonation or pre-ignition.
