Heard detonation...now what?
Heard detonation...now what?
Yesterday, finally took my L out into a country back road to see what she would do. Started off fine, took off like a raped ape! At about 80 MPH ,16 LBs of boost, Fuel pSI at 56 and the tach at 4800 RPM started to hear the sound of, well best described, as a slight knocking, or pebbles bouncing around. Got out of it immediately. I know exactly what my A/F's are, and am running on the rich side. It alsmost sounded like the borla exhuast..but couldn't confirm it. At neutral, and 3500 -4000 RPM the truck ran fine.
The truck did not lose any power when I heard the noise. I am running 94 octane.
What now? Talked to Sal briefly on MIRC last night and he mentioned the voltage of MAF. Can I check that myself, and with what tools?
Was on the diagnostic computer at the Ford dealer last week and everything checked out fine.
Should I be worried, or am I being a little paranoid? Look forward to all your responses, ASAP if possible.

I would swap the delta chip for a revolution and talk to JL about getting some fine tuning. He may of mentioned this to you already. A true "custom tune" on a revolution chip solved my tuning headaches.

Next question, I guess, is can detonation come and go...example: hear it one WOT application, then not on another.....
quick
The answer the last question is YES.
Do yourself a big favor, the next time you go out for a test drive make sure your fuel tank is AT LEAST 1/2 full, I like to keep mine at 3/4 or more.
I've been inside that fuel tank and there isn't any baffling in there to speak of. I'm thinking seriously of sectioning my tank and installing baffles to help hold the fuel around the pumps.
A rule of thumb is this: at 1G of accelertion the fuel will stand up at not less than a 45* angle. 1G is a piece a cake on a descent running truck.
I did some quick measurements and found the tank to be roughly 4.5 feet long with the pumps sitting at about the 2.5 foot mark measured from the rear of the tank. Also the largest part of the is at the rear.
