Recommended EGT sensor location??
Is there a preferred installation location for the EGT pyrometer?
On my old 5.0 Mustangs, I welded a bung on each header tube, 2" from the flange and could swap the thermocouple around. Most often cylinders 2 and 7 where most likely to be the leanest.
I am running stock manifolds for now (and for a while), but I'd like to put my old EGT parts to good use protecting the L. Is there any particular cylinder on the blown 5.4 that seem to torch quicker than others? Where is the hot spot, EGT wise?
With all the tuners, track-ies and dyno-riders, we should have a good database available.
Thanks all!!
Herb

Hot Herb, Since nobody has helped. I would say follow the directions as far as where to put the sensor, most of the times its between 1-2 inches from the head. Since our Lightnings have a straight shot into the head, I dont think we experience certain cylinders leaning out over others like the Mustangs do. The rods usually let go, so I would say weld the bung at the easiest place possible.
Good Luck and if anything my post takes yours back to the top for more views and maybe better replies.

Thanks BigFan,
The 1-2" from the head matches the pyrometer install instructions (and past performance). My main concern was whether there is a track record for a 'historically' hot cylinder. Once I go to long tubes, I'd like to repeat the bung in each tube idea and set up an 8 position rotary switch to see any cylinder I want with a single EGT gauge.
BTW - PLEASE drop the whole 'Hot Herb' thing!!
I was looking for 'attention' and it seems that sexy screen names have been getting it lately!!
:rolleyes
I definitely remember a thread here or over on www.nloc.net that folks were talking about one cylinder that typically goes through plugs faster than the others. A few good tries with the search function might dig it up or hopefully someone will chime in with a link.

Thanks Easter,
How much variance have you seen between the two banks? I know it will be situational, but just an idea of the spread..
Thanks,
Herb
(with fingers all cut to hell from running gauge wiring this morinng - Does Ford sharpen everything under the dash as a security measure?...)
