what does Detonation sound like

i was reading through a bunch of old messages today and i keep seeing people say 'listen for detonation'

my truck blew a spark plug once in its lifetime, but got a entire engine replacement compliments of Ford... well that was the previous owner...

im not hearing any noises... but i would just like to know what exactly it is im trying to listen for.... thanks

Sounds like pebbles bouncing around in your engine. Constantly popping the harder you get on it. You will know what it is when you hear it, its not a normal sound.

Like crushing dried leaves, like crushed ball nearings or like sand swirling around in your intake. Thats what it sounds like to me. LOL

My understanding is that Lightning do NOT have knock sensors due to false readings from vibrations of the S/C. That is the reason to insure there is no detonation because the truck can not “retard” the timing to cure the problem…

Like throwing small pebbles at you truck window. Except now make that rapid fire when you hit the gas hard.

I think I heard it for the first time just recently. It was kind of how NTIMD8 described it. I called it a fast fluttering sound, sand swirling around could be another way I would describe it also.
It sounded like it was coming out my vents like maybe something was caught in them and air was blowing thru real fast. It def. got my attention because I never heard anything like it before.

BTW: My chip had to be reset.

I always worried too but if it does happen you will notice it.
