Clunk and warranty questions....

when ford "fixes" the clunk under warranty, do they also do an alignment and adjust(replace?) the cam bolts?? Could I get a set of washers and put them on immediately after service at dealership and have the alignment done under warranty? I really do not understand about the cam bolts. I do know that this shouldn't cost ME, but it will to have it done right!! Any info gents?? thanks, Mike

no, they generally install the camber adjusters when they do the "clunk fix". BTW they will probably only perform the clunk fix if you own a '99-'00 truck, as all the '01 + trucks come stock with the toothed washers from the factory.

they will only install the camber adjusters IF they are doing a warranty alignment (under 12months/12K miles) and the alignment won't come into specs without adding them. warranty alignments don't pay chit, so chances are slim of you getting them even if they are needed.

so what I'm saying is NO, because even if you had a 99-00 with under 12K miles, it would be out of warranty by date.

your best bet is to get some herbs washers, the factory fix doesn't work anyway, and then buy and have the ford camber kit installed on a pay basis.

good luck.

chris

mike, like I said, your best bet is to get the washers.

but since your truck is an '01 there is a good chance that your truck is still under the 3/36 warranty.

if it was sold on any date after today in '01 or later, then you should still have warranty.

you might go by the dealership and see if they have one guy that does the alignments or if every tech in the shop does alignments.

if there's just one guy, then you might go and speak with him directly.

it totally depends on him, but you might be able to get him to do alignment, install clunk washers, install camber plates, etc. all under the warranty ticket.

that way you get the free warranty alignment, get your camber plates under warranty instead of having to buy them etc.

if you explain to him what you are doing and why, then he may be helpful. of course, it never hurts to offer to throw in a $20 or two (or case of beer etc.) with the deal.

if he doesn't know what the clunk washers are though (and there is a good chance that he won't) then you might be better off just installing them prior to taking the car to him. they are not hard to install, but that "unknown" aftermarket part may cause him to be leary of getting involved with the whole situation.

there's also the other side of the coin, if you just go ahead and pay to have it done professionally, then you have a reciept and a warranty on the alignment should anything not come out to your satisfaction.

eitherway, good luck.

chris
