hit a few snags on the motor this morning

morning guys.

happy monday.

I hit a few more minor bumps in the road on the engine this morning.

I came into work early to bolt on my rear main cover, oil pickup, canton windage tray, and mororso oil pan.

well first I had forgotten to install the dowels into the rear of the block for the rear cover, that was fun to do while the motor was bolted to the engine stand.

so I get that on, and put the windage tray on and the pickup interferes, I knew about this one in advance, just a little trimming and they both fit into place.

oh almost forgot, either canton or holcomb sent me Ford FE studs for the oil pan, standard, not metric, no workie.

so I used my trans pan studs and dropped the oil pan on and the pickup hits the bottom of the pan!

sweet.

gotta love monday mornings!

oh well, like I said, just a few more bumps in the road.

I'll get it straightened out.

this will give me something to do tonight...

INSTEAD OF PUTTING THE ENGINE IN THE TRUCK.

that's the price you pay mixing and matching different parts, they are all supposed to work with stock parts (sometimes they do, sometimes they don't) but then you go mixing aftermarket manufacturers and you are bound to hit some snags.

later,
chris

you know hind sight is always 20/20.

so looking back this seems to obviously be a bad idea.

but here's where I ran into trouble today.

moroso oil pan

canton windage tray

ford high volume oil pump and (cobra?) pickup

now any one of these parts would work fine by itself in addition to a stock lightning engine.

but mix them alltogether and you run into problems.

the moroso pan would have worked fine with the stock pickup, but not so hot with the cobra one.

the moroso pan MIGHT have worked with the cobra pickup, but not with the canton windage tray installed.

the canton windage tray would probably have worked great with the stock pickup, but required some bending and cutting for the cobra pickup.

in any event, after some grinding, some torch heating, some hammer banging, some clearance checking, and a helping of silicon rtv sealer, I got everything installed in relative harmony.

what a PITA though. and the motor install has been pushed back YET ANOTHER DAY.

the lesson here is, try to stick to one manufacturer.

I should have prolly bought a canton oil pan and canton windage tray, or just the moroso oil pan.

oh well, learn something new every day.

I just hope it doesn't leak oil.

we'll see.

later,
chris

I didn't know you were running the ford high volume pump or I would have warned you about that too.

I had to grind a big notch out of my pan and take it to a welder for a patch. Then the next week is when I found out the pan wouldn't go in the truck. All total the pan cost me probably 3 weeks.
Actually the canton tray and extra gasket help the situation, it gives you more clearance around the pickup.

Oh one more thing.....I did some measuring and found out the pickup was a good distance off the bottome of the pan and I wanted it closer so I had an extension welded into the pickup move it closer to the floor of the pan. It is now about a 1/2"

did you use 2 gaskets?

canton's instructions say to use a gasket on one side and silicon sealer on the other if I'm not mistaken. (which I could very well be, since I bought the tray some time last year and now I can't find the instructions)

but anyway, I used a ford gasket on either side of the windage tray for that very reason (additional clearance).

I was just a little concerned about possible oil leakage through all of those seams.

BLOCK to GASKET 1

GASKET 1 to WINDAGE TRAY

WINDAGE TRAY to GASKET 2

GASKET 2 to OIL PAN.

sheesh what a headache.

is yours holding up ok?

thanks,
chris

Yes I used two gaskets same as you. I used a smear of silicone in a couple of places that look like they might be trouble and Yes it is leak free and fits great....Now

LOL, I might've used more than a "smear" on mine.

hopefully it'll be fine. I think it should be ok. I'm just glad to hear of somebody else trying this before me and it working out ok.

also thanks to sal @ PSP

I was getting really frustrated and trying to figure out a way to make things work.

not thinking clearly and ALMOST made a STUPID mistake. luckily when I asked him about it, he pointed out an OBVIOUS problem that I wasn't seeing, and had I gone that route would have seriously regretted.

thanks sal.

Thanks for all the great writeups - I think you're making more shade-tree mechanics out of us!

ha ha, don't say that, I don't want to be responsible for anyone else going through this.

don't get me wrong, it's fun, but it has also been a ongoing source of worry and headache.

I feel like a huge weight will be lifted from my shoulders once this thing is up and running!

I hope it'll all pay off in the end.

later,
chris

P.S. I think the only thing I've got left to do is install the wiring harness. I put the plugs, coils and headers on this morning.

so the motor "SHOULD" be going in tonight!
