Trany ticking?
Trany ticking?
Last night on my way home from a Lightning game I was following my gf to a gas station. She made a light I didn’t, and in an effort to catch up with her...I launched from the light (perfectly might I add) and ran up to about 90 or so and let off, by then she was right in front of me again.
Anyhow, I pulled into the gas station and shut her down. When I was done there I fired her back up and started home...at a normal speed. I had my windows down and thought I heard a ticking sound coming from the passenger side window. (no its not a plug)
It came and went for the whole ride home. When I pulled into my driveway I left it running and walked around to see where the noise was coming from. It was twice as loud while driving, but I could still hear it at idle. It’s coming from either the trany, or the cats... I’m going to try to listen again today.
Has anyone had a similar issue?

Just went outside for another listen, doesn’t sound nearly as loud as last night...but I didn’t drive it, I just fired it up and let it idle for 10 min or so. Something new though, my exhaust has water continually dripping out of it...it hasn’t rained in a week. Along with the water some black dust seems to be mixed in with it... it dripped the whole time I let it idle...it was a decent amount of water all in all.
I also revved it up a few times, the engine sounds great, but the exhaust seems to be choking on something. The only other time it has made a sound like that is when the fluid level in the trany was wrong. I’m going to check on that next.... anyone care to provide some input?

i didn't have a ticking, more like a faint gear whine and a small tic. tic. tic fast paced, it was on the stock trany and what it was is the intermediats in second were gone, which caused second gear to blow up. this didn't happen right away, the tick and whine lasted from some time in may to july 3rd wich was d-day
i sugest you e-mail gregg evans, if it is something wrong with the trany he can usually decipher what it is by you describing the noise. GBEVANS@peoplepc.com

I wouldnt doubt an exhaust leak could happen, I have the stock manifolds though..and have not installed anything other than different mufflers. I dont hear an "air" type of sound... its a ticking that almost sounds rotational, I thought it had something to do with a wheel until I heard it at idle. It defenitly increases with speed and does get louder at higher speeds...it isnt effected by the throttle though, just by the speed the truck is rolling...
could my driveshaft be the answer? maybe its giving way?

WHile driving down the highway yesterday ( I-4), with a concreate barricade on the shoulder of the road, i could hear a ticking noise .. im having the same problem you are. its driving me crazy
That usually comes from hot rodding your tranny, heating up the oil, then shutting it down pre maturely with out giving it a chance to cool down. Gotta watch out for those automatic trannies. Treat em like a turbo. Heat is bad.

Like I said the ticking is not just heard from inside the cab, I climbed under the truck and it sounded like it was coming from the trans pan, or the cat that is next to it. The ticking has gone away for now...but I havent driven it since friday night... so who knows what is in store for mondays drive to work.
I have never heard this sound before, even after multiple trips to the track and the ocasional hwy blast. Im not pushing any excessive HP, I only run a 2#er...I have a 3+ quart trans pan, and the FTVB... not that those are life savers or anything...but I did slight upgrades to compensate for the pulley's increase in torque.
The reason I think its the trany is the fact that the exhaust is sputtering some...this happend the last time I changed the fluid...and I was about 2 quarts or so low... I filled it and everything has been fine.
Its odd...
