I Smell FRESH tranny Fluid in the Grill ???

Whassup wit tat ???

I've noticed it a few times but was never ever able to quite finger it. Everything running tops, no problems to report, no lose of any fluids, Parked in the identical spot forever with no staining.

But when ever I come back from a death ride, and shut it down,
I smell something, yesterday I DEF pin pointed it to the front grill,
yes I was sticking my nose sideways through the opening and
thats where the odor is generating from. Def smell like FRESH RAW Tranny fluid, but again, no visual leaking or lose of fluid.
I immediatly climbed under the truck and nosed the tranny and there is no smell or odor near it AT ALL.

Opened the Hood and did the nose test, again no odors or smell.
Checked it at least at 4 diff shut downs yesterday and got the same results everytime, it's coming from the grill.

Today I wil run home at lunch time and check it in the light,
check all levels again, bla bla bla... But any issues up there
people have run in to, anythign special to look for,
(of course I checked the tranny lines to the radiator).

It's a weird smell, almost like a gear oil smell, but more like
a fresh tranny fluid smell ???

WTF.............

Funny you say that cpeapea,
During the S/C Swap I was once again thrilled to see not a drop,
stain, or trace of any fluids around the heads, manifolds, oil pan,
seals, etc... I really eyed it head to toe detailing the Motor for early spring clean up.

But I did notice in A FEW off motor cooling Hoses that it appeared
there was tiny tiny seepage coming from the factory clamps. THE RUST AND STAINS is what brought me to this conclusion.
And I did question myself often yesterday if it was a faint coolant smell I was smelling and not tranny fluid, hmmmmm ?

Good info, I'll look it over well today

Rob, I think cpeapea was referring to the tranny cooler (mounted up front).

I'm at work so this will have to do (SMACKING MYSELF IN FACE) HARD and saying Duuuuuuu, stupid me.

Oh Wait, I knew that

Well then I guess it looks like two possibilities for me to check,
BTW, how do I get in there to see ANYTHING ?

You have to remove those plastic screw things to pull the radiator cover off. I think there is a half dozen or so of them.... This is it under this tranny pan. Mine is carbon fiber

Thanks Guys
Sometimes I'm soooooooo Stupid, I scare myself.
Obviously I know we have a Tranny Cooler up there,
but for some stupid a$$ reason, I never put 1 and 1 together.
THE DAM 60's + 70's WILL DO THAT TO A PERSON

Well the good news is NOT A DROP near the Tranny Cooler,
or Heat Exchanger for that matter. I checked each connection
and it's dry dry dry, no fluid of any kind on the lines or coolers
anywhere. Oil + Trans Fluid good, same with Intercooler + Rad tanks.

I did find this, it seems where the Upper Trans line goes into
the Radiator, there is some grezzy schitt, and running down the drivers side of the PLASTIC radiator end section.
Enough to say, hey I see that, but not enough to lose any fluids over. I wiped and smelled it, don't smell like nothing.

Here's the Line itself where it goes into the PLASTIC Rad End
You can clearly see the grezzy stuff I talk about

Better view so you know where I'm talking about
You cant see it in this picture but on the side it's grezzy too

You can see it a little better here

Oh well I guess it's nothing to worry about as far as a leak,
I'll have to wash that crap off, and keep an eye and nose out.
maybe it's the death Rides itself burning the Motor Up, hehehehe

can you guys see this dude walking around his truck, smelling each and every spot... kinda like my pup does when he needs to use the bathroom Go see if autozone has a "smelloscope" maybe that will help pinpoint the location of the "mysterious trans fluid smell"

j/k Rob, I wouldnt worry about it though, you dont have any signs of leaks, the truck drives normal... just do like the Gator and drive it like you stole it... until it breaks... then fix it... or something

Maybe it's the Mercon V and the torque reduction off?? I guess your tranny is just saying one last goodbye.

For what its worth, I had a smell that I could not tell from what or where it was coming from last week on my L.
This was during/after 3 WOT pulls(2nd gear).
I have had this smell maybe 4 or 5 times since I owned this 2001.
I have spent many long days at race tracks, and know the smell
of gas, oil, clutch, brake pads, ect. and this did not smell like any
of them.
These WOT pulls were right after installing my Apten.
I did have some anti-freeze leek out the back hose's when I
took my intercooler off for cleaning.
I had anti-freeze leek around the block when I put on the E-fan & cobra water pump also, maybe thats what I smelled then too.
After reading this post that is my guess as to what I smelled and maybe what Rob02 is smelling also..??

there is a second tranny cooler in front of the a\c condencer, so its between the grill and the condencer, then comes the radiator then the fan, it is about 8 by 8 inches, you might have already checked this, but its there. i belive the lines go from the tranns to the radiator cooler to this smaller external cooler then back to the trans. it may have taken a rock and got a small leak..
