Filling the OEM Wiper Cowl

My 2nd wiper cowl is almost ready for the paintshop. Just have to sand all the tight areas now.

Bondo layed thick

Sanded smooth, made sure not to sand to much so the vents don't show.

Nice and smooth

How did you back the cowl to fill in on top?
Did you use fiberglass or something?

I might have to do that to mine while I am in the "smoothing" mood

Easy, I used duct tape on the backside to prevent the bondo from dripping thru. You will need to start with a thin layer and build from that, it took me around 4 layers to fill the vents flush. Sand the original plastic real good with course 80 grit paper, then just sand inbetween layers of bondo for good adhesion.

I plan on having to sand some high spots down on the backside for final fit on the truck before the cowl goes out for painting. I also plan on using heavy duty velcro to keep the center of the cowl pieces down flush, if you notice I filled the screw holes there.

hey guys, on the side steps and bumper bads, did you completely sand the "ridges" off of the pieces and then go over with bondo just for smoothing purposes? or did you actually fill inbetween the ridges with the body filler?

I ordered spares of all of my mouldings the other day and am planning the same mod. I hadn't decided if I was going to sand the "ridges" off of the steps or if I was just going to sand and smooth and then primer fill the texture of the plastic, but leave the raised ridges intact.

what about the bed rails?

thanks!

later,
chris

DON'T FILL THE RIDGES, SAND THEM SMOOTH.
Filling the ridges would be a mistake and cause the parts to crack down the road. The rule of thumb is the less filler the better.
Also, if you fill the ridges your parts won't meet with the body lines.

Sand till you can't sand no more, then use the lighweight body filler (bondo) and spot puddy to fix minor imperfections.

I just recieved some of this bodyfiller... much better and stronger than bondo.
