its a 99 , no recent mods truck was runingfine service engine light came on but when itook battery off to remove the chip it clearedthe light. ob2 shows no codes ,rough idle and sputters untill around 2000rpm then starts to smooth out. i have not yet changed the gas filter , 450000mi i am the second owner got it with 33000mi on it.
Check the air filter for dirt, clogged-up, etc. first, then change the fuel filter--no matter what else you do.
Then, 99 Ls have a problem with the fuel line coming loose from one of the in-tank fuel pumps. It's a clamp problem. Do the first two things first before you drop the tank and cross your fingers.

Good luck.
Ben there done that.
Was running perfect. Parked and went in the house. Came back out and would barely run enough to get in the garage.
Lucky the tank was low on fuel. Found the hoses to the fuel pump with one completey off.
A hint if you want to go that way. Do not try and pull the hoses off the tank vent on top. Cut the hoses in the middle and use a plastic barbbed nipple and clamps to reinstall or you will break off the hose connector on top of the tank.
I read a old post where the dealer techs try and loosen the bed bolts and lift up the bed rather than lower the tank and mess with all that. Sounded crazy to me at the time but now I can see the logic.
Be real carefull when you remove the pumps. (dealer price is over $600) There is a filter bag over the pickup and the fuel sending unit are all together. Just be gentel and lift it all out as one. replace all 6 crimp clamps with stainless screw type clamps.
You won't need any other material or gaskets if you take your time and work methodicaly.
Check your fuel pressure on the manifold fuel rail first.
On restart it will sputter a bit while the air is removed then you will have your baby back up and running.
