Fiberglass

want to make a custom pod for some guages and maybe a new sub box......only problem is i dont have that much experience with fiberglass. I know it takes forever but its def worth it in the end. Anyone have a how to on this? My one main question is what do they use to get the shape underneath the glass?? if you want a circle you cant use wood.

you can build a mold from anything that you want, as long as you put some plastic bags, or seran wrap (sp?) in between the mold and the fibeglass, the resin wont stick to the wrap, so you can pull the glass rigth off when it dries!

hope that helps

First...you must make a model of the exact shape you want. Wood and Bondo work great. Make sure that there's draft on the sides and no undercuts.
Next...use a parting wax to coat the model.
Next...build up sucessive layers of resin and fiberglass, making sure you work out all the air bubbles. (Take a cheepo 1" paint brush and cut the hairs down to about 1/2" long to make the tool to do this.) When it dries, seperate it from the model. You have just made the mold.
Next...wax the mold, and apply layers of resin and glass.
Next...seperate the part from the mold and trim-off the excess glass.
Next...wash the part with acetone and paint it.
Rewax the mold and make more if you want.

Good luck

think i'm going to try some .035 metal sheeting with some bondo to fill in the lines to make the lines run smooth.

how about a hole saw or a band or jig saw, you can cut any shape you want. I was there/sorta helped with some of my custom speaker box and it does indeed have wooden rings to support the speakers.

good luck.

later,
chris

jim

what kind of circle are you talking about? im a little confused...you could just form a straight "wall", then cut out the circle with a jig saw likesuperfords said...

if its a really odd shape you could use modeling clay to shape and then wrap it like i said before. you can really shape anything you want, then glass it, the hard part it sanding before the paint!
