Angry I Killed It

I was going down Rt55 about 4 miles outside of Deptford doin about 80 when I decide to get on it a little. At around 108 I got a jerky sensation and then BOOM! Scared the ***** outta me. The smoke was so bad that about 2 minutes after I pulled over a state trooper pulled up and said that someone had reported a car fire, lol. So, to make a long story short, I wound up ventillating both sides of the block and I threw the #3 rod. I was planning on getting a built motor, but not like this. Oh well, this sucks, add another granaded block to the list.

Sorry to hear the bad news. What were your mods and details on your tune?

D-Day

That sucks man. If you can say, what mods did you have? I take it you're either out of warranty or don't expect it to be honored.

I'm really hesitant right now. I was planning on doing strictly appearance mods for my first year or so of ownership, but I'm getting cabin fever and have been thinking a lot about making some engine mods too. But I'm disadvantaged in that I got suckered into buying an 02 instead of an 03-04 with the thread problem fixed, and just last week I uncovered a thread about bad rods in the February and March 2002 build dates, which affects mine. So now I don't know what to do. If I could go back, I'd be confident to have bought an 03 instead, but I'm stuck now though I love my new L.

Anyway, my rambling is done. Good luck with the repairs.

It's a 99 with:
Diablo chip (Very conservative tune)
6lb lower pulley
102mm maf tube from REM
S&B 12in Filter
Denso Plugs
Factory Tech Valve Body
Bassani Exhaust
I have some other appearance mods too, but I doubt my pillar guages, ect. blew my engine up,

According to some people around here you can't break a rod at that HP level on a 99...guess you proved them wrong... Sorry to here about your misfortune..

Man what the hell is up with these damn rods, this has me all paranoid. A rod should not blow with those mods, it just shouldn't happen.

Big question is did you hear any detonation? With the colder weather comes detonation.

I don't get it some L's have the chip, pulley, exhaust, even spray and run fine and there's an L that blows a rod from just driving it like you should be driving it, rompin on it like it's ment to. I don' t mean all the time but the S/C isn't on there for looks ya know. Should this sort of thing worry me, it seems like the majority of pepole really don't have any main problems, I don't know maybe I'm just a paranoid new L owner. My L has 4:11 gears, 2000 stal, 6lb lower pulley, superchip and spray (75 shot), which I haven't even used. I just don't want to feel like I have to baby her, I can't afford a blown motor...

NTIMD8, no I did not hear any detonation at all. And no Gator, it wasn't really a kickdown. It was more of a slow buildup to about 80 and then stomped it. And POW! Damn highway looked like a crime scene. I laid down about a 1/4 mile of oil. It was all over the tailgate and everything, it was a mess.

Sorry to hear about your motor. I dont get why ford put a realy good crank in the L engine but crapy rods. talk about saving money. but they did build the 03/04 cobra motor to handle like 800hp. Or somthing crazy like that. somtimes I think about trading up for a cobra. Then i go for a joy ride and love the L once again...

Maybe the 06 L engine will be stronger.

Good luck with your new engine Morpheus.
