Seeing I'm picking up by DSG this week could you please elaborate on this paint issue. I sense its the rippled/textured surface on the DSG photo vs. the smooth surface on Robs_02 black surface???

Is it a problem with all model years or just the 03?
Does it show up on any surface or just the tailgate?
What is the best way to detect it?
If its present what is recourse; anyone deal with it?

Sorry for the questions, but just need to know before picking-up by baby.

Thanks Frank

I have a DSG '03, and I have orange peel that looks like that on the back side of the rear quarter passengers side just about the taillight. Think my tailgate is OK though.

My good friend recently picked up an 04 chevy blazer xtreme in bright red, the only problem was that his color choice brought out the fact that the car was covered with orange peal. Before he took delivery he demanded to have the entire car rid of it, which from what I understand is a pretty expensive process for a paint shop to do. This happened about 2 months ago and he's still fighting with the dealership because each time he gets it back the orange peal remains

That's where the auction starts, but it won't end at that price. I'm sure it will creep up to x-plan teritory in 3 days.

My 03 had an orange peel area in the right lower corner and the appearance of a masking line running diagonally up to the upper right corner (a sharp break between the orange peel and smooth paint). No sign of any damage and doesn't really make sense it was touched up in that area. I compounded it out with Meguires compound and it pretty well eliminated any sign of it. Don't know what they are doing with the paint on these trucks.

I work in the paint shop at a toyota plant. Orange peepl is going to happen in masss production. You could lightly color sand and buff most if not all of that out in my opinion. It is pretty bad though.

You're probably right BUT the dealer is willing to let it go at that price. Hell someone could bid $40K

Frank

ps- 2D5hours to go still no bids

Rob did you wet sand your truck or is that the way it came from the factory? Orange peel can be remove by wet sanding. When i got my truck new it was all orange peel!!!

You can go to a dealer and hammer on them for the "new" 03. I got them down to 26.5k but fell in love with the blue 02 and went with that.

Yours was damaged as it was removed from the car hauler and the dealer had it fixed. Back in '99 when these were first arriving at dealerships, many had damage to the lower front as they were removed from the haulers. My '99 had damage that was fixed by the dealer.... my 02 is clean as a whistle though... and in long term hibernation.
