Precision Measurement of engine components
oh, and another thing or two. some of you may be wondering why I didn't file the rings BEFORE installing the crank. well to get the best measurement you need the have the torque plate bolted on and the mains bolted in place like they will be in the motor when it's running. I didn't have 50 sets of torque to yield side main bolts so I just waited till now. it shouldn't be a problem as long as I clean the rings before I install them into the bore and don't let any filings or debris fall down onto the crank.
and the other thing, some of you may be wondering about the location that i'm checking the ring gap. I have always been taught to stagger the ring ends on either side of the piston in line with the piston wrist pin. staggered to reduces blow by, and in line with the wrist pin because the sides of the piston perpendicular to the wrist pin recieve the most load and wear. for whatever reason the manufacturer of my rings says specifically NOT to install the end gaps in line with the wrist pin? I'm not sure why, but maybe somebody more knowledgeable will chime in. anyway, that's that.

chris

Chris,
Although I haven't posted here in some time since I lost my truck, ive been reading to inform myself of all kinds of great info. Your posts are the best. Ive been following your buildup of your motor closely, and have learned quite a bit of info! Your a good man.
