Camshaft Position Sensor ?

I had an SES lite....hooked up a diagnostic tool and it pointed out the code for camshaft position sensor....The truck sounds a bit like it is backfiring thru the intake on startup....

Anyway..I tried a search..to no avail...I have changed these on my SHO...I know the Lightning only has one on the passengerside head...I havenot looked yet....Is it accessible and what needs to be removed to pull and install?

Could I have knocked the wwire loose while pulling the Blower and moving the pulley tensioner around?

Part number?
Ford Parts Online lists only one for 99-04 ....about $20.00...
Thanks...

it's VERY easy. Look under the intake boot on the timing chain cover. Unplug it and take a 8mm to it and it just pulls out.

When I had that exact same problem was caused by the cam shaft sproket comming off the cam shaft. The sproket broke the sensor causing a SES light and when it came off the pistons hit every valve and bent them on the driverside head. It also backfired very bad and I think the backfiring ruined the injectors cause they have not been right since.

I hope you do not have this problem. Do you have aftermarket cams? I had the Crowers in and the bolt holding the sproket on backed off and everything went to hell from there.

No..stock.....I have reset the troble code ,,,it will crank and run fine...but shut it down and next key cycle it sets the SES lite again..Guess I'll be looking and checking before turning it over again...would not want the problems you had..How come the sproket was coming off? Aren't they keyed on ?How did you solve this problem?

Thanks for your replys...

The crankshaft sensor gears like the oil pump gears are powdered metal. They sometimes break and wreck an engine. You can buy replacements, but they are several hundred dollars...

I'm sorry. When I said replacements I meant strong aftermarket replacements. I think any of the vendors sell them. The actual powdered metal ones from Ford are inexpensive as well as cheap.

Changed the sensor....Not sure it was actually the sensor....

Changed PCM's....No problem.

I had that problem in my truck... it was actually part of the PCM that had gone bad. Dealer replaced it and it ran great after that.

What I did was swap another ecm and then reset the code...stayed reset..this time..then I swapped back to the original ecm and ..NO..code....I almost think what solved the problem was not over tightening the bolt on the harness connector to ecm....just an opinion though....finger tight..before I had snugged it up with a 1/4" driver....

Who knows....I'm happy now....
