Steering Column Boost gage question
Steering Column Boost gage question
I am about to install an Auto Meter boost gage( part # 4104) on the steering column( Steering column pod part # 15004). How and where are you guys runing the vacumm tube and the electrical wires. I don't want to see any wires, but I also don't want to molest my dash by drilling holes. Whatcha think?
Duct tape the hose and wires to a straightend out cloths hanger. (smooth the leading end/edge) Then simply feed it down the top of the steering colum (sp?).
There is a vaccume line that already comes into the cab right above the brake pedel. Just cut and "T" into that. Hook up the wires, secure all loose wires & hose and your done.
I would recommend one thing!! I made a mistake about my guage not being on *zero* before I put it in. I had never done one before so I though it needed to be cycled or something. WRONG. It should have been dead nuts on 0 to begin with.
Which btw was purchased through a supporting vendor here on this board. I did and when I called asking about this they told me it was "normal and supposed to be that way". "you can even call autometer and ask them if you'd like" (this is exactly what I was told in an attempt to make me a "satisfied customer"). I did and Autometer told me it was supposed to be on dead zero.
So... that particular vendor will never recieve another penney from me.
*satisfied customers* don't like being lied to, nor do they like pulling the guage back out, nor spending thier money to ship the guage to autometer, nor re-installing the guage.
Rich (sorry for the tangent)

Thats odd. I sell a lot of autometer and it is rare that the boost gauge be dead on Zero. I spoke with autometer years ago asking about this the 1st time I noticed it and they said it was normal.
Usually its some place in the box at the Zero. In fact mine was not on the zero and everytime I turn off the tuck and then when I get back in I notice it is at a different spot. Some times it is dead on and some times it is a little to high or low. Also when I go on the dyno my boost gauge is dead on.
So unless it is way off, i.e out of the box I wouldnt worry about it.

Well, I ordered the 105-4103 Auto Meter Lunar Gauge / Boost, 30-psi Boost/30-In.Hg.(Vacuum) and 105-15004 Auto Meter Steering Column Mount Gauge Pod from JEG's last night..
I plan on hooking up the boost line to the guage off of the stock boost line under the steering column using 3/16 x 3/16 x 3/16 "T" fitting and Vacu-tite part# 47405 1/8"x5/32" soft vaccum connector/elbow. I've heard that if you immerse the tubing that comes with the guage in fairly hot water (not to hot!) it will uncurl easily and less chance of a kink. Yes, will make sure no water gets in the line. If any fitting is tight to get on the hot water (not boiling) trick works on tight fittings also.
For electric wiring I plan on attaching the "-" neg to a grounding point somewhere under the dash. For the "+" / power, for the guage I will hook that to the small light blue wire with red/pinkish stripe on the headlight switch panel. Wired this way the gauge light will function with the dimmer.
By the way, the light switch panel just pops out. While you are in there why not do the Fog light mod. Go here for info on how to do this mod which is easy to do go. --> http://www.svtlightnings.com/svt/how...s/foglamps.htm
