Apten Blower....A Bit Worried

I had Apten port my supercharger and I am a bit worried about the amount of boost I will be making. I still have stock internals and don't want to throw a rod. I read another post that they made an additional 4 pounds of boost due to the porting. I am currently running a 5 pound lower pulley and with the additonal 4 pounds I would be making a total of 9 pounds of boost. Sounds like disaster to me. Even moving down to a #4 with 4 additional pounds still puts me at 8 total.

Should I move to a #2 or even put the stock pulley back on? Does the porting really make an additional 4 pounds or is that number inflated a bit?

Just to take it one step further, lets say the porting makes 2 pounds of boost, with a #5 pulley plus the additional 2 puts me at 7, still way to much for a stock block....

Please put my mind at ease....

In order to help ease your mind, just send me your ported blower and I'll send you my stock Eaton. Wouldn't want you to loose sleep at nights.

The truth about blown motors

ANY amount of boost is safe. If you do the math, boost causes insignificant pressure on the rods COMPARED TO detonation.

Increased boost causes increased risk of detonation which causes increased risk of a ventilated block....

but the actual boost isn't a problem.

Just my two cents.

Here's what I am putting together in my garage:
-Ported Apten
-2lb lower
-PSP filter
-FTVB
-JDM single program
-Timeserts

nothing too fierce. If your worried then go with a 2lber until you feel better. I am going to buy a 4lber when it gets warmer and I feel like crawling around in the garage.

Dont be afraid, it will be an excuse for a built block.

Not sure about the Lightnings or cars without extreme boost but on our 03 cobra when we put on the apten we didnt see any boost gains. It was 21 before and after. The only difference was it held the boost longer and a point higher from 16 to 17.

I also heard you see no extra boost from the ported blower. Maybe 1 psi max. I am sure I read that a few times. The guys with the ported blowers should chime in here any minute

I have heard that from several people with Aptens as well. That 1 lb diff could easily be caused by just change in weather. But Brian says 1-3#

I am getting the same boost...............but it is happening with 4lbs less pulley.

We'll see what happens when I work my way back up to the 6Lower and 2 upper I had before.

Something else....how long ago was the mustang test done? The Apten porting has gone through a coupl changes that seem to be putting out more boost.

And, on the cold weather theory....I really did not notice any rise in my boost due to cold weather(before Apten), maybe a half pound on my 11.81 day. It was 42 degrees outside.

I have been told by a few tuners that cold air does not necessarily = more boost pressure.

In reference to the Apten ported blowers, it was my understanding that the Cobra's rear inlet blower is much more effiecient than the L's top feed inlet. So by porting the Cobra's blower, it enables the S/C to move air more efficiently (thus making more power), but since its inlet is already efficient to start with, the gains in terms of boost are less noticeable.

Thus, when Apten does their thing to the L's blower, the enhancements made to said inlet, vastly improve the blower's ability to ingest air, which enables it to build boost more effectively versus the "stock" Lightning Eaton. Just my .02...

Later,
Rob

Hey Brad, Coldie has it dead on.

It's not the amount of boost itself. It's the tune that will maximize power but keep you safe. You'll want to put together a complete list of mods you have, some times slips w/temps on that day (they'll be looking at the speeds mostly), and send the chip back to your tuner of choice. Get..er back in the mail and hit a dyno with A/F measurements to verify the tune before the season starts.

This is exactly what I plan on doing.
