Am I gapped too high???

I installed TR6's 800 miles ago. Not knowing any better at the time, I gapped them at the factory setting 0.044. Is this too much? No blow out, nothing. I haven't had any problems with them at all and the truck is making big #'s (see sig). Do I have anything to worry about?

Mods are 4# lower, chip, K&N drop-in.

you should probably gap them closer to 40- Id say between 38 and 42 is safe. Only because they are cooler spark plugs.

I am not sure what boost your running, but the only problem you will have is blow out. If it is not happening, you are actually getting better combustion than with a smaller gap.

I am thinking that you are running in some dry air conditions. Higher humidity and you will get blow out if your running much boost over stock(more than 2lbs).

I am running a .041 gap right now with 8lbs of pully over stock. No blow out yet. I will be decreasing the gap for the upcomming FFW in Florida....(higher humidity).

What will you feel if you did have blowout?

Would it be like a miss?

Will it throw a code?

If you are going to have blowout; Will it only happend under WOT?

Can blowout cause damage to the motor?

Thanks
Mike

See the next question......

>>>Would it be like a miss?<<<
Yes

>>>Will it throw a code?<<<
I don't know, but I would guess that it would show the same code as a "miss".

>>>If you are going to have blowout; Will it only happend under WOT?<<<
I guess it could happen at idle or cruising around too. But for the plug gap to be so wide that it happens at idle, that would be a pretty large gap.

>>Can blowout cause damage to the motor?<<

I would not think so, unless you just kept cruising around like it didn't matter. But then anything that is not "tuned" or running right on the motor will cause damage eventually. It is not going to cause instant terminal destruction.....at least I hope not, because I sure have been playing around with widening my gaps a bunch. If someone posts here that it is real risky, I will probably find some other way of entertaining myself....LOL.

Thanks
Mike

Just to clarify what I am talking about. The scenario would involve enough compression to keep the plug from being able to fire across the gap. It seems the higher you go with boost, the smaller the gap has to be.

I am basicly splitting hairs to gain maybe a couple H.P. or two. The best way if you don't have alot of time to pull plugs for fun and entertainment, is to go with the gaps recommended by your tuner. I really don't think it is enough of a difference to warrant worrying about to much. The L is a hobby for me, so I am always screwing around with it, just to see what happens...LOL.

The only reason I mentioned the "blow out" was to give you a way of knowing if your gaps are to large.

If you are not getting a "miss", you probably good to go. If the truck starts to miss or "sputter" it could be the plug gap, especially if your running on a gap near the higher end of what is recommended.

I am not familiar with the proper gaps for your brand plug(I run Denso) but with any brand...to high(large) of a gap...and the spark won't jump across....it will miss.

From the post above by JDM, it sounds like your in the recommended range. He suggested a little smaller gap, but you are in "range". If it misses at times...pull em and reduce the gap a bit....if it doesn't miss...your good to go.

I get BLOWN OUT everyday

Dragon,
like they said, if your running good, strong, and miss free,
then you got nothing to worry about.

There I was, 16yrs old, the summer of 70 SOMETHING
(ahhhh "tie stick summer", yum yum yum....)
and my first day of Driver's Ed class. I made a unconscious decision right then and there that if I learned how to drive high, then I'd always have high driving skills.

3 decades later and my theory still works
