Question ABS brake removal?

If I was interested in removing the ABS brake system, how would I go about doing it?

Is it just unplug and connect the hoses? Do I have to use a proportioning valve?

I need more room under the hood where this controller is located is the reason I am tried to find out about it. Thanks.

Last I checked, in the four-wheel ABS system our trucks have, special ABS-enabled equipment is designed into the master cylinder, the apportioning valve heading to the rear wheels, and the electrical portion of the braking system is specially designed for it also. I don't think there is such a solution as just unplugging it. You're talking about basically ripping out the system and retrofitting an older braking system in its place. It's not really a mod you can make, and IMO it's a bad idea anyway.

What could you possibly be installing there anyway? Is it just the computer that's in the way? You could always reroute that easier.

It is easy to disable and drives fine without the abs being active. I took out the fuse half of last year. I just wasn't sure if there were proportioning valves built into the unit. It sounds like there is from what you say...
If the unit was removed there would be a ton of space for some exhaust tubing to be routed around there.

I'd have to pull the service manual (which I don't have yet) to be sure. But if you're just pulling the computer out, and have it inactive now, maybe it would be OK. I know the brakes are designed to still work if the ABS chips fail, but I'm not sure about removing hardware.

Maybe a turbo, but I can't guarantee it. I just see lots of space if all of those brake lines weren't in the way.

perhaps if theres a junkyard nearby you can look to see if the rwd antilock brake from 97-98 f150's might be useful to you. I don't know if they would be less in the way or not.

Thinking of turbo alone or turbo and the top blower?

edit: actually i think the earlier xl's didn't even have antilock.

I'd be interested to know how it works out for you; I hate the ABS. How I drive it seems like it is always kicking in, and messing up my stops in traffic.

You can remove the ABS with no ill effects. Just remove the HCU/module assy, and basically add new lines in to attach the master to the rest of the system. You'll also need to remove the ABS light, it will come on with nothing hooked up.

Be sure to let your Ins company know you removed the ABS.

Just like I told them I was running nitrous, no cats, racing it at the drag strip and running high boost.
