Finally, no oil in my intake !!!!!!!

I had a separator, a baffle, and a restriction in the outlet of the PCV system and I still found a small amount of oil in the intake this weekend. This setup keep 95% of the oil out but that not enough for me. Also I had concerns on the size of the restriction I had to use to keep the overly active PCV tame....which might cause incomplete venting. I would never plug a part of the closed loop PCV system like others swear buy for obvious reasons and even plugs still allow the hot oil/water/acids contaminated air venting into the cylinders......they just keep heavy oil out.

I know of a few trucks that run factory PCV systems "oil in the plenum and intake and all "...and they still run great..Steele's 12.3 1/4 01L comes to mind.

anyway I'm done toying with it.......its gone. I installed breathers with a small catch pan with oil absorbant mat under them to keep oil that drips out off the engine.

If you use breathers you obviously have to plug the source of metered air (inlet) drivers side intake boot and the (outlet)
and the line at the intake galley. heres some pics.

what do you think of the idea of the small catch pan?

Do you have a run down on parts used? I would like to try that....

well I used P/N 62-1490 K&N breathers from O'Reillys 19 bucks because of the size of the 1/2"inlet hole on that P/N breather.

I used 1/2 heater hose on the drivers side that was a perfect fit on the male fitting on the cam cover. Inside that hose I have a piece of 1/2 tubing that runs into the breather....cut to what ever height you want. I used band clamps .....

Passenger side i used the factory PCV and took it into the parts store and found a fuel line that fit it to use as a splice. I only used about 2.5 inches of this and very tight fit into another 1/2 tubing up to the breather. I put a piece of 5/8 hose on the outside of the tubing for looks.

Also on one of the Isle's in O'Reillys with the PCV generic elbows and lines there was a package of two rubber cap plugs 99 cents that are a "perfect" fit for the rear of the plenum and the other end of the vent line that comes from the intake boot.
used the factory 90 for the line to the intake galley with a bolt.

catch pans are just some "Move Alls" from Home Depot I had here at the house...there what you put under the feet of furniture
to move it. The pading in them was beat up so I used some oil absorbant mat from work, "we put it under jet engines so soak up oil" but you can probably just use the pading that comes in the move Alls. Or you can come up with something else .... I thought about going to look for something metal like a lid or something but just used what was handy. Come to think of it ...it was eay to get a tight fit when I drilled the 1/2 hole in the hard plastic..so made pvc type plastic like the move alls are the way to go.

now the tubing I got from work ..but I'm sure there are several ways to create a similar setup.

What about the unmetered air everone talks about?
Could someone also explain the Unmetered Air theory? I do not understand how air in the Heads/block could affect a/f ratio/

Red- With those hoses being as long as they are I'm thinking that you won't be needing those "catch pans" I know my driver side has a breather (also plugged the intake boot) and I never see oil there. Now with no suction on the passenger side, the long hose should most definately be enough with the breather. Just my .02. Nice job, btw!

Because alot of people on these forums add a breather to the passenger side and leave the PCV system intack,.... This would introduce un-metered air into the intake through the cam cover and up into the back of the plenum.............bad call
Simply, plug the only source of meter air ... the intake boot, the line from the cam cover. This is your PCV systems inlet air/vent source that is metered. Then plug the outlet...at the rear of the plenum. Your computer dosent know what it cant see

When you read threads about chip reprograms and running lean its because they left some part of the PCV open or the line to the intake boot on

This is one of those moment where saying less is better

BUT YOU KNOW I HAVE TO LOOK

I think (key word being think) that it's not the un-metered air in the heads we worry about, it's when unmetered air coming in the Breather would go in the valve cover and get pushed up the original PCV Line and into the Upper Manifold, hence into the path of our Fuel Air Mixture UN-METERED.

What Red here has done was eliminated that line (pluged it)
and by leaving the original PCV but having it ONLY go to the Breather, he's allowed proper ventilation of the Motor, but again eliminated the possibility of un-metered air to go in the rear of the Uppr because it's no longer hooked up.

RIGHT RED ???

AWESOME JOB RED, SIMPLE, BUT EXTREMLY EFFECTIVE
