This is a great write up explaining what is going on durring detonation. I hope someone finds it helpful to make the right choices.

From: Colorado,
LOL!!!!!

My origanal plan was to cut and paste a paragraph or two and then I suddenly got cross eyed and barely got the link.

There was just so many little bitts scattered around.

I have always felt that if you want to stay on the cutting edge of performance.
Watch what the motorcycle guys are up to. They do a whole lot with very little. But then there not trying to make a 4,500 pound missle ether.

Interseting that the mad scientist was named Rob

wow, finally a good solid scientific reason to run rich. I've asked that so many times but never really had well sourced answer. Great link.

This may sound stupid but....

This may sound stupid but does anyone have a sound clip of a lightning under detonation. I dont mean it actually blowing up, but at idle. I only asking because everyone talks about detonation of lightnings and i am worried about the slightest little noise. Somethimes i hear a little knock but then it goes away. I dont know if its detonation or just my 4# pulley making the blower spin faster. i have a 99 with a superhip 4#jlp lower and a 90mm mass air meter with a cold air kit. I havent felt a pause or delay when stomping on the gas so i hope itisnt detonation but any advise will be taken into consideration. Also would a dyno tune stop detonation and help detonation from happening. Thanks eddie

No sound clip for you Eddie sorry
But first thing first
WELCOME ABOARD BRO

Yes a Dyno tune will rid you of any doubt and detonation.

I see your from Jersey, hope your running SUNOCO ULTRA 94 ???
they took it away from us here in NY @ 4 weeks ago, THOSE ****** *)@&$%#@$)%#@$)%#)&$%$#)$%#)%$#)$#
You are lucky, you have awesome tuners right there in NJ,
JDM
http://www.teamjdm.com/

and

Outrageous Performance http://www.outrageousperformance.com/store/default.asp

But rule number one, USE ONLY THE HIGHEST OCTANE AVAILABLE
As for a knocking sound that goes away, I don't like the sound of that, unless your hearing Cavatation ?? Thats a Blower noise usually associated with running a differant pulley, I have it, causes no prob's but can sound like a rattle coming from the S/C.
Best way to describe it would be your truck idles and sounds like you got a diesel motor in it. Some L's also have piston slap, that can come and go.

As for Detonation, most people describe it as a marble in a can sound, but all I can say is, when it happen to me, there was no
mistaking hearing it. However some do experience a small amount of detonation that I'm told is very difficult to hear,
expecially if your not use to the sound of it. One tuner explained it to me as the sound you wound get when you were a kid and put baseball cards in your bicycle spokes ???

Sounds like it would pay for you to get a Dyno Tune, JDM is a Superchip dealer and an awesome tuner, give um a call and talk to Justin about it. 732-780-0770

It sounds just like a NA motor under load/knock. But a lightning has such a loud intake/whine that it makes it harder to hear. And the danger of it on a S/C 5.4L is substantialy more so!

Sounds the same. Sounds the same.

It's difficult to describe what "detonation" sounds like, particularly under "race" conditions, when you're often paying more attention to a lot of other things and/or loud exhaust systems, etc. Usually when you hear it, you'll know it - a type of "knocking or pounding" noise - and often at that point or shortly before, you may feel the throttle pedal "pushing" back at you. At this point you're in the condition known as "audible detonation" - a bad place to be. The tricky thing to be aware about detonaton is; that when the conditions in the combustion chamber are right for it, when it "begins", you won't hear it. This is one of the reasons why those who are continually modifying their engines and changing ignition timing, A/F ratios, cylinder heads with different combudstion chamber volumes and shapes etc. for more power and/or changing track conditions, are constantly monitoring their spark plugs, exhaust temperatures, cyl head temperatures, etc. to try and detect the onset of detonation. When you're searching for maximum power - you're right on the edge of detonation. And the best of engine builders, on the search for maximum power, have lost some engines due to detonation. And this is why those in the prevous posts have talked about "safe tunes" and "dyno tunes" with the objective of being able to do some things to your engine to give you some more hp - but at the same time - stay away from conditons that could lead to detonation. Those often referred to in here as the "Lightning Tuners" have the expertise and experience to give you the best advice as to whats safe to do on the street - and whats nudgng the limit on the track. And you have the experiences of many in here, of what they've been successful with - and sometimes not - to pay attention to.
