Ignition Timing Pickup Location

I need to verify that my timing pickup is correct as my new long block has a almost diesl sounding detonation at light throttle unless I run my NO2 program. My other 2 non NO2 programs (4 program PSP chip) detonate while applying throttle. I tried my old JL chip (pre new motor) and no chip and the ticking/tapping/detonation sound is still there. I am wondering if the pickup could possible have been installed wrong advancing the whole curve overall. I am not sure where the pickup is located. Is it on the crank or the end of a cam? If so is there an easy way to determine if it is correct by looking at it. If it is on the cam how can I verify cam timing?

Find someone in your area that has a scan tool.

Though if you still have the noise with an old chip or no chip you may want look elsewhere for the problem.

Noise

Hi: Just wondering, do you still have your EGR valve hooked up? Sounds like you may just be getting spark knock at part throttle, you might also check and see what dish your JE pistons have one place I read said that one piston or the other raised the compresson from 8.4 to 8.5 to one while not much it may require a new tune. Just my 2cents

ping

Do you know if the block or heads were decked? also I dont remember do the JE pistons have the modified offset of the wrist pin to help stop piston slap on forged pistons?

The block was new and the heads were not cut. I am not sure about the Piston issue. They do not mention it on the web site, but list the Compression as 9.0 to 1 on a 4.6 so the 5.4 would surely be less with the longer stroke using the 17cc dish.

A local engine builder (been in business 35 years). As I did not do it myself I cannot verify anything. Unless I find something else I may have to pay someone to verify it. It sucks.
