anyone else hate their flex a lite fan?

I am going to put the stock fan back on unless someone has an answer. I've melted two controllers and I still melt a wire about once a month. The guy at flex-a-lite told me it was from the connectors being loose. I crimped them so hard that I can barely get them on the controller but it still get way to hot. I think maybe the fan I got just pulls to many amps. Looking to an answer this side of going back to the stock fan.

Jerry,
That stinks. I like the design of the fans themselves, but your experience sounds too familiar. How about keeping the fans but switching over to a regular relay-based switching system. Maybe something like this would do the trick.

My truck worked fine all last year. I pulled it out of the garage a couple of weeks ago to let it run awhile. It is a good thing I was kinda watching it. Steam started coming out from under the hood. The controller for the flexilite fan gave up again.

I've heard about this problem but have had nothing but perfect function out of mine for 13k miles / 1 year. And that included one 4 hour cruise at woodward with it (AC) cranking the whole time.

I think there is nothing better then a factory electric fan. I know to many people who have the flex-a-lite fans, and have them break with in a few months. If you can find a stock electric fan that will fit the lightning then go with it. I think the SN95 fan will work on those trucks. I have one on my 87 mustang now. From the looks of it, It looks like it will fit just fine. My 2 cents

Try pretinning the wire with solder before crimping on the connector, then soldering again. That will keep the resistance as low as possible, keep it from melting.

tlfwatch,

No.... you got that wrong bud. (I was the W/P engineer for all the mod motors)
The only reason we even speced mech fans was because of towing capacities. Otherwise they would have all been e fans.

wydopnthrtl,

I have a Flex a lite; Will that effect my towing? I didn't put the fan until late september, so I haven't ran it during the hotter months yet. Does the mechanical fan cool the "tranny cooler" also?

Thanks
Mike

I have the Troyer e-fans and have not had any problems with them other than their desire to blow fuses the first couple of days of driving with them. Probably the bearings were a little tight. After that no problems.

What I did and think it is a good idea is to spend $2.25 at Radio Shack and buy some LED's. Tie them into the fans so you know when the fans come on. They fit quite nicely on Autometer pillars.

They come in red green and amber, so I put a green one on the low speed fan and a red on the high speed fan to let me know when they come on. I've got a pic floating around somewhere that I'll try to dig up.

The guys with FAL fans may be able to do likewise.

Kind of a lousy pic as my camera does not care for the Cyberdyne gauge.

I have the JDM fan kit, been on for 2 years, works like it was built that way.
Just a suggestion, Maybe buy the JDM wiring kit?
