Clunking noise when backing up
Ok, this is my first problem with my DSG. when I put her in reverse, and start backing up I can hear a little clunking/rattling sound from (only an educated guess) around the left front tire/inner fender well. It is more pronounced when I am turning the steering wheel to the right. I also have a fastair kit, maybe the hose is rubbing against the tire? The sound is kind of hard to describe. One other thing, since its been getting colder and colder, my truck has been acting weird. When I start it for the first time in the morning, the truck literally lurks forward. It doesnt roll forward, but it does kind of lurch forward. Any ideas for either of the two guys? Thanks
The lurch is normal; most Lightnings seem to do it.
The "clunk" sound may be the dreaded "clunk." Do a search and see if the info fits your symptoms. If it does, again, a well-documented Lightning problem. Fixed by using some special washers.

the lurch is due to the warm up thing. The idle is high for quite awhile to make the engine warm up faster. Perfectly normal, althogh i like to let the engine simmer down a bit before putting it into drive. Maybe down to 900 rpm or so.
Re: Clunking noise when backing up
I've had the lurch on my 03 since day 1 and figured it's due to that big a$$ cold engine roaring to life. Sometimes it seems to shake the whole garage
.
No strange noises when I back up.

The clunk problem is undoubtedly the infamous f-150 clunk. You can fix this problem by installing these:
You can get them from David Lynn for $30.00. His email address is dplynn@bellsouth.net.
The second problem is normal. If you notice when you first start the engine on a cold day it idles a lot higher. Putting the truck in drive at 1200 rpm rather than 800 rpm will make the truck "lurch" forward.
I usually wait for the engine to come down to 800 - 900 rpm before I put it in drive -- it only takes a couple of minutes.

I think the lurching forward he is talking about is first thing in the morning when you start up the truck it will lurch forward while it is in park mine does it too I try not to park too close to anything cause it seems to move a inch or 2 when you crank it. It kind of gets your attention doesn't it.

Mine lurches forward on startup, too.
As for the "clunk", I haven't noticed it on mine, but I need to get under there and look around.
I thought this was fixed on the '00s and later. Maybe not.
