DETINATION Q`s !

Hey guys, I got this wierd phoebia about getting detination. I`m scared that it might be happening and I can`t or won`t hear it. I don`t feel like yankin` out the motor in this cold weather just to have to replace the rods, crank or piston. This is my daily driver so I need to baby it for a while. This truck runs really strong and I never hear any knockin`under the hood so far, even with the cold air and oxygenated gas we have here in NewYork. When I dynoed last month the A/F was steady around 11.7. What do you guys think? Worry or not worry?

Jim, if it worries you in the cold air, just stop by and I'll pull a few degrees of timing for you.

There you have it, Sals on the Job.

Me You and Sal live within miles and minutes from each other.
Last winter I had two RWTD tunes, 15 degrees and 17 degrees,
both worked flawlessly and Detonation free with 93/94 pump gas using either 4lbs or 6lbs of extra pulley. This year I have two JLP programs, one is 16 degrees, and one is 18 degrees, again both run flawlessly and detonation free with 6lbs of extra pulley. (usually I pull off 2 lbs for the winter, but haven't yet)

However I will ad that I have colder plugs than you, and a Multi Spark Box.
Both MAY allow me to run a little more timing + boost than you.

Be worried and get the A/F checked out on a dyno. I was at JDM's all day today trying to get my race side dialed in with a specific mod. I got there at 8am this morning and didn't start working on the race tune until 3pm.

The reason we didn't get started until 3 was because I had asked Jim to just "Check out" what my A/F was on the street side (I haven't had problems with it ever before, and it ran fine with no audible pinging). When we did the first pull we found that the A/F ratio was a little monkeyed up. One thing led to another while trying to get it right and we wound up changing the fuel filter, then the plugs. We found one of the center electrodes was gone from one of the Denso IT22's. This was most likely due to the way I gapped them. After TR6's were installed and a little adjusting, Jim got the A/F on the street side where it had to be. A truck seems like it is running fine until you go push it to the limit trying to prove something at a stop light and he11 breaks loose.

I didn't get accomplished what I really set out to do today, but the most important thing is that I have a safe tune now. I would rather be a little down on power than to have to rip a motor out of it. On the other hand, while I was waiting for a few cooldowns, those guys down there had a motor out of one and apart in a couple of hours. Pretty amazing.

Thanks guys!

Hey Sal thanks for the offer but not only do I want the cake, but I also want to eat it too. Yes I`m worried about pinging but, the truck runs mint so I`m afraid if I pull some timing I`ll lose some power. I never ever here any pinging now but when I read some of these "threads of horror" it make me concerned a bit. I ALWAYS run premium fuel. I hear the fuel now doesn`t have MTBE but has some other type of chemical made from corn (good?, bad? or worst than before?) Sal I`ll take your advice on this. What do you think I should do. You know my tune and you know these trucks. I`m not holding you to it, just give me your opinion. All in all, I`d like to leave the timing alone, but will take your recommendation please.

Without knowing FOR SURE, you can have your cake and eat it too, BUT there might be a piece of broken glass in it. You won't know till you bite in the right place or eat it all, It's Your Call.

Jim, I don't think there is anything wrong with your truck, from when I heard it run on the dyno. But if you are woried about it pull 2-3 degress out of th truck. How much hp can you lose? like 5hp that is nothing, and you won't even feel that loss.

Pulling 2-3 degrees out you will lose a lot more than 5 hp and you will feel it especially when the truck heats up.

Hey Jay, you know the deal. It`s an addiction. It`s never enough.

ping

I too was getting light pining under hard accl on 93 pump gas today I removed the chip and went back to the stock program but all the other mods remain, well the truck runs great I guess it needed the richness of the stock tune due to the 4# pulley (installed after the chip) and the lower timing of the stock program stoped the ping no ping at all I'm going to leave it this way for winter thin tune after other mods in spring (P.S. diddent mean to hijack your thread)

Hey LIGHTNING5.4, you make a good point there. I guess I could just yank the chip out for now but unlike you, I hear no ping at all. I`m just worried about pinging that I might not hear like some people here talk about. With loud exaust and blower whine, it`s possible not to hear light detination. Besides, it`s the chip that makes my truck move. Let`s face it, these trucks are so lazy with the stock tune. Maybe I`m over reacting but I`d just like to know if it`s possible to find out if I have this almost silent detination. My airfuel ratio is steady 11.7 and it`s around 30 degrees here in New York. Anybody? More opinions please.

What does detenation sound like? I was in a friends truck and he went WOT with the radio off and I could hear a sligt hissing (kind of like a tick but with a hiss instad of the tick) nois. It is an 03 as well and the only mods is a chip and open air filter. He heard it as well and we poped the hood and everything sounded and looked fine. It was about 60 degrees outside. What do you think we heard?

Hey thanks crash. I didn`t know the ecc-V could record detonation. I`ll call Sal soon to set up an appointment for that. I`m sure it`s OK but I don`t thing it will hurt to double check.
