Shaved Bumper Step

Finally got my last piece of exterior plastic shaved and painted!
I shaved the step myself and a paintshop did the rest.
Decided to ditch the roll pan for this option.... I kinda like the way it looks!

Before

After

Also had my steering column pod done at the same time.

Looks nice!

I saw a Lightning that had all of the plastic steps painted, but not shaved... Looked good from a distance, but not that great up close...

Is there any concern that since it is shaved, it might have a tendency warp in the heat? I live in the northwest and even up here the bed rails warped this year. BTW is does look great.

No clue on the warping, the piece did flex real easily when I was shaving it.
There seems to be enough material once the ridges are shaved for this not to happen in the heat. Time will tell!

Thanks, now it's time to finish the engine bay.

My list is getting smaller, slowly:

- Install rebuilt Polished Blower and Plenum
- Install Polished Greddy Catch Can
- Install Fuel Pressure/EGT Gauges
- Finish Polishing 99L Rims
- C-Notch Frame
- Install 4:10's and JDM Girdle Diff Cover
- Smooth/Port/Ceramic Coat 01 Manifold (inside/out)
- Install Polished PoPipe
- SCT Dyno-Tune

those turned out very very nice.

I'm assumming you sanded the stock ones down?

can you give a few details on the procedure?
(this is one mod that took a lot of work and was well worth it)

I'm assumming you shaved down the ridges.
Did you think of adding Dura-glass to the crevices and smooth it out that way?

What did you do to "shave" the plastic. Did you just sand it down?

I did used the oem bumper cap.

The ridges where taken off with a DA and 3" sanding discs. I started with a 36 grit disc and slowly removed the high ridges, This has to be done on medium speed as high speed will cause the plastic to melt and cause a big mess.

Once the ridges were removed I switched to a 60 and 80 grit disc to even and fade the rest of the surface. I then switched to a porta-cable orbital sanded and some 120 and 220 sanding discs. This removed most of the dimple texture that is molded in the part. All the tight spots were sanded with 3M 80,120 and 220 sandpaper. There was roughly 4hrs of prep time on my side.

The bodyshop did all the filling and finish work.

Adding duraglass would be the quick way to go, with that much filler I would worry about separation and cracking. I would also worry about the step not being even with the smooth caps once installed.

Looks sweet tampa! You have any other pics from different angles? Also what side caps do you have? I was also another one wondering how that would turn out cause I'm still not a big fan of roll pans...looks good though
