I have used it a few times, for the price I would pass. I doubt the price is justified.... 2 bux for the motor craft filter...it was about 7-9 bux for the K&N gold filter

its not like you will notice the difference or anything...

IMO they are worth it. I use them on my three vehicles primarily for the 1" 'nut' on the bottom, making for easy removal.

good filter, not really worth the price, mobil 1 is a tad cheaper and just as good, as well as the motorcraft filter, which i personally like the best.

That nut sure is cool tho.

I always used K&N oil filters on my Cobra, along w/ Redline or Amsoil Synthetic oil, depending on which one they had in stock at the local performance shop.

Probably overpriced and unecessary, but the peace of mind that it gave me was worth the extra couple bucks.

K&N Oil Filter

I've been using them for a couple years now, they're excellent. The 1 inch nut on the end makes it real nice for removing and replacing. I'm not concerned with spending 9 bucks for a filter after spending 31 G's for the truck and then another 20 G's in mods. I say yay !!!!!

a strap wrench works better than the "nut" does.. 9 bucks is of course pocket change for just about everyone on here, I just ask my self... "Is the K&N 9 times better than the 820-s MC filter?"

nah, not even close... oil only gets so clean...and we change it every 3k anyhow

Konig,
I have to agree that the K&N is overpriced. (Paying for their name) The nut gimic even, is not worth all the extra $. Guess if you are foolish enough to change synthetic oil every 3,000 miles as some do and waste those $ you might just as well waste a few $ more for the K&N name and there nut on the bottom filter..

The Motorcraft FL 820S has been tested over and over and proven to be a very respectible filter. A filter also recommended by Ford. Personally, I'd go with the Motorcraft FL 820S oil filter and use the extra $ toward the purchase of a Motorcraft FG 986B fuel filter which should be changed fairly frequently.

Konig, You might find this study on Mobile 1 synthetic interesting.
To change synthetic oil at 3,000 mi. is really wasting resources and $ . Personally, I change my Mobil 1 and filter at 6,000 miles. I have a strictly street driven '03 Lightning that gets the occasional WOT spurt. I live in NY and not the desert. I'm sure there are those that will say my changing my synthetic at 6,000 miles is overkill. Changing at 3,000 miles would be ridiculous.

I race my truck and drive it every day.... 30 bux is oil isnt a big deal every 3k miles... sometimes I do push it to 5k if I havent been hard on her.

The color of the oil goes from dark brown (3k miles) to black at about 4.5-5k miles...if you dont run it down the strip anyhow.... if its black its getting changed...

FWIW.........

Mobil 1 and a MotorCraft 820S
Change the filter @ 3K and add a quart
and a complete oil/filter change @ 6K

does the oil keep coming out when you take the filter off? I have always drained everything before taking the filter off... a lot comes out even with it drained first

You'll lose about a quart of oil on just a filter change. Change the filter, add a quart or so and you're good to go. The additional new oil will help replinish part of the additive package of the oil which allows you to go a little longer also. This is common practice in long haul trucks that go up and down the highway. Many of them can get 15,000 to 25,000 miles without a complete oil change.

As far as changing oil by sight, that's not a very good indication of oil at all. Many oils will turn dark fairly quickly and still have a lot of useful miles left in the oil. Oil analysis is the only true indicator of a condition of an oil. 3,000 to 5,000 miles on conventional oil and 5,000 to 7,000 miles on synthetics should be easily attainable.
